Most of us can learn how to do something simple on our own with just a set of instructions. However, to learn about something more complex, it’s always best to have a teacher.

Teachers bring with them varied and useful backgrounds. They’ve been trained to teach individuals in different ways depending on their style. For instance, omen students learn better by discussing a topic. Others learn more by writing about it. Teachers can help students learn in the way that’s best of each student. A textbook or a manual can only give you one way of learning something. Plus they’re only as helpful as your ability to understand them. A good teacher can adapt her teaching to your needs.

Teachers help you focus on what you’re learning. If you’re learning something by yourself, it’s easy to become distracted, and go on to other activities. Teachers keep your attention on the subject. They also approach a subject logically, taking it one step at a time. On your own, it’s tempting to skip parts of the learning process you think you don’t need. That can binder your ability to really understand the subject.

Learning a subject on your own is a very narrow way of learning. You can only use the information you get from the textbook. With a teacher, you get the information in the written materials as well as the teacher’s own knowledge of the topic. Teachers can also provide extra materials to broaden the scope of what you’re learning.

There’s nothing wrong with studying on your own, and a learner can always benefit from some quiet study. For the best possible learning, though, a good teacher is the biggest help you can have.

Delivery Ability Matters or the Contents?

In college,it is claimed that students are given the right to select their courses in line with their personal ,in actuality, college students have to take some compulsory courses and some required selective those occasions, professors will find in their lectures students are absent-minded and hence interactions with students in class can not be easily people think that if professors are eloquent enough and have excellent delivery ability, their class will be students, the contents of professors’lectures seem less ,we can not simply assume that which one is more important than the should make specific analysis.

Firstly what matters is undoubtedly the contents for compulsory courses or selective courses, students are required to acquire basic knowledge or want to learn what interests them. It is ridiculousto suspect that professors are professors can stand in front of students and are givinglectures, they are experienced and know more than students after years of research and teaching. For college students, they are required to attentively listen to professors and take notes so that they this sense, when students are busy absorbing what professors are instructing in class, they will become less fussy about professors’delivery skills.

Secondly, for professors,it is their responsibility to have a full preparation for lectures and to deliver effectively the contents of their lectures to the contents can fulfill students’needs, excellent delivery skills will arouse students’interest and hold their attention for a long the fact that students can not select their favorite courses according to their own interests and preferences, professors should make more efforts to prepare for course, each professor has formed his own style after years of teaching. But students in different periods have different characters andneeds;professors can not simply apply their styles to all students. While students in the past might regard professors’ delivery style funny, current students are likely to dislike the style and consider it outdated and manipulative.

On all accounts, as we can reach different conclusion from different perspectives, we can not simply determine delivery ability mattersmore than the contents or vice interesting teaching styles andcontent-loaded contents make professors popular among students, college students should not forget that they are required to acquire knowledge in class.

Some people believe that attending a college or university in a foreign country has many advantages. They think that attending a college or university abroad can help them learn more than they can from universities in their own country, especially when they go to a developed country where they can catch up with the pace of scientific and technical advance of the world from that country' s modern lab facilities. In addition, they can pick up the latest developments of the living language there more quickly, develop their ability of coping with the routine matters such as finding a part-time job, renting a house and helping with the house work, and learn many new things to widen their views and broaden their minds.

But some people don't agree to it. They think that attending a college or university in  foreign country also has many disadvantages and the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. They hold that students studying in a foreign country will have more difficulties in both life and study. The most serious problem is the language barriers. They have to spend much time learning a foreign language and even if they have learned the language, they still can' t understand thoroughly what the foreigners and teachers say just because of the unfamiliar culture background and social cu

Some people like to eat out at food stands and restaurants, while others like to prepare food at home. Often it depends on the kind of lifestyle people have. Those with very busy jobs outside the house don’t always have time to cook. They like the convenience of eating out. Overall, though, it is cheaper and healthier to eat at home.

While eating in restaurants is fast, the money you spend can add up. When I have dinner at restaurant with a friend, the bill is usually over twenty dollars. I can buy a lot of groceries with that much money. Even lunch at a fast-food stand usually costs five or six dollars for one person. That’s enough to feed the whole family at home.

Eating at home is better for you, too. Meals at restaurants are often high in fat and calories, and they serve big plates of food--much more food than you need to eat at one meal. If you cook food at home, you have more control over the ingredients. You can use margarine instead of butter on your potatoes, or not put so much cheese on top of your pizza. At home, you can control your portion size. You can serve yourself as little as you want. In a restaurant, you may eat a full plate of food ^v^because you paid for it^v^.

It’s true that eating out is convenient. You don’t have to shop, or cook, or clean up. But real home cooking doesn’t have to take a lot of time. There are lots of simple meals that don’t take long to make. In fact, they’re faster than eating out, especially if you think of the time you spend driving to a restaurant, parking, waiting for a table, waiting for service, and driving home.

Both eating at restaurants and cooking at home can be satisfying. Both can taste good and be enjoyed with family and friends. I prefer cooking at home because of the money and health issues, but people will make the choice that fits their lifestyle best.

Many people visit museums when they travel to new places. Why do you think people visit museums? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Harvard Business School professor George Lodge calls the ritual acceptance of blame “almost a feudal (封建的) way of purging (清除) the community of dishonor,” and to some in the United States, such resignations look cowardly. However, in an era in which both business and governmental leaders seem particularly good at evading responsibility, many US managers would probably welcome an infusion (灌输) of the Japanese sense of responsibility, If, for instance, US automobile company executives offered to reduce their own salaries before they asked their workers to take pay cuts, negotiations would probably take on a very different character.

What is good writing?

It depends on what country you’re from. We all know what’s considered “good writing” in our own country. We grow up immersedin the cadencesand sentence structure of the language we were born into, so we think, “That’s probably what every country considers good writing; they just use different words.” If only! I once asked a student from Cairo, “What kind of language is Arabic?” She said, “It’s all adjectives.”

Well, of course it’s not all adjectives, but I knew what she meant: it’s decorative, it’s ornate, it’s intentionally pleasing. But all those adjectives and all that decoration would be the ruin of any journalisttrying to write good English. No proverbs, please.

Spanish also comes with a heavy load of beautiful baggagethat will smotherany journalist writing in English.

English is not as musical as Spanish, or Italian, or French, or as ornamentalas Arabic, or as vibrantas some of your native languages. But I’m hopelessly in love with English because it’s plain and it’s strong. It has a huge vocabulary of words that have precise shades of meaning; there’s no subject, however technical or complex, that can’t be made clear to any reader in good English—if it’s used right. Unfortunately, there are many ways of using it wrong. Those are the damaging habits I want to warn you about today.

First, a little history. The English language is derived from two main sources. One is Latin, the other is Anglo-Saxon. The words derived from Latin are the enemy—they will strangleand suffocate everything you write. The Anglo-Saxon words will set you free.

How do those Latin words do their strangling and suffocating? In general they are long, pompousnouns that end in -ion—like implementation and maximization and communication (five syllableslong!)—or that end in -ent—like development and fulfillment. Those nouns express a vague concept or an abstract idea, not a specific action that we can picture. Here’s a typical sentence: “Priorto the implementation of the financial enhancement.” That means “Before we fixed our money problems.”

Believe it or not, this is the language that people in authority in America routinely use. They think those long Latin words make them sound important. It no longer rains in America; your TV weather man will tell that you we’re experiencing a precipitation probability situation.

I’m sure all of you, newly arrived in America, have already been driven crazy trying to figure out the instructions for ordering a cell phone or connecting your computer, or applying for a bank loan or a health insurance policy, and you assume that those of us who were born here can understand this stuff. I assure you that we don’t understand it either.

What Kind Of Life To Live-Realistic Or Romantic?

There has always been an argument between the young and the old about what kind of life to live-realistic or romantic. Young people tend to think real think that real lofe is as dramatic and fascimating as it is in the novels and movies while more experiened adults think this na?ve daydream is certain to be broken by later experiences and everyone should learn to get used to the dull routine of his everydy life.

However, there are some inadequacies in the opinions on the part of both sides. Life will be unimaginable if everything we do is only for realistic purpose, and the same is true if what we do everyday is just to enjoy ourselves. So it’s not difficult for us to see that neither way can ensure a happy life.

In my opinion, a real happy life can never be separated from either of the two ways. On the one hand, let’s enjoy life-enjoy the excitement of sports. On the other, let’s not forget our work. Happy life can never go without hard work.

Faced with the question whether it is worthwhile to spend a year or two voluntee ??ring in western China, many college students would probably shake their heads, seeing it as a waste of valuable learning time. However, I will give an affirmative answer without hesitation, because this experience can apparently benefit us in many ways.

First, it is a great opportunity for us to apply the knowledge we have acquired at college. Different from temporary part-time jobs, a longer volunteer work experience is truly fulfilling and rewarding. As English majors, we can learn to use and teach the language effectively in real classes; as education majors, we can experiment with those textbook theories in helping manage a school or instruct the younger; those who study engineering can take this chance to turn their ideas and skills into running machines, new bridges and broad roads. From this experience, we will better understand our schoolwork and even build up considerable expertise in our chosen fields.

Second, we can gain a great sense of satisfaction by making contributions in an underdeveloped region. Right now, the western China is suffering from both the short ??age of resources and that of talents in its course of development. If we can step into the needed roles by simply sacrificing a year or two, we will be able to make some differ??ence to the situation as a whole. Imagine how proud you will be when telling your fami??ly and friends how you have taught the illiterate to read, and how you have helped to change the look of a backward town. Compared with the great sense of pride you feel, a year‘s time is just a small price to pay.

Third,we can establish a deep friendship with local people. On the one hand, if you truly love and help the people you work with, they naturally love and help you back. Take a senior I know for example, who served two months as a teacher in a dry northwestern town. During the period of water shortage, both his students and their parents voluntarily kept water for him, sometimes despite their own need. Recalling his days there, he said they were not easy but he could not help missing them. Probably many volunteers would feel the same as him. While we are giving care, support and help, we often get back more including a lasting friendship.

Therefore,I will readily sign up to volunteer in the western China despite various challenges I may meet. Think of the differences we can make there and the changes this experience can make to us, why not walk out of the ivory tower and step onto the promising land of our country?

Laozihao is not only the commercial phenomenon, but also the history in miniature. It is popular for its unique arts and crafts. However, some of these enterprises have become outdated or are operating in red dueto a rigid conventional thinking, loose management or have different opinions about whether the Laozihao should be preserved or not. As far as I’m concerned, the critical point is not only toremain but also to preserve and develop the Laozihao. Laozihao is important to the traditional culture andthe national commerce. As a time-honored brand, Laozihao enjoys the extensive reputation in the society. It is of golden opinion, and carries the trust of the customers. Moreover, it is the precise non-material cultural heritage. The city without Laozihao will lose the unique scene as a famous historic city.

In the market-oriented economic society, Laozihao satisfies the emotional need of people for the national it cannot be denied that now Laozihao are paying their way. Affected by the market-oriented economy, Laozihao are taking the shine off. The out-dated concepts, old-fashioned products and backward management are all the factors for the fall of Laozihao. As for the fact, we should not only remain the Laozihao, but also have to preserve and develop it.

First, the support system of Laozihao should be built up. The advanced technology, automatic intellectual property rights and modern organization are key points in the development of Laozihao. On the basis of keeping its traditional features, it should work out new products, which are more suitable for the modern society, so as to extend the market share. Second, Laozihao should have the priority in the policy and finance. It is the most important embodiment of a historic city. So In the urban planning, the original locationshould be preserved. And the government would finance them to improve their technology and equipments. Third, it is suggested that Laozihao should be preserved as the intangible assets of the country. In this way, Laozihao will do good to the cultural landscape as well as develop its own commercial function.

In conclusion, Laozihao is the carrier of the traditional culture and arts. It’s a symbol of the nationalhistory. We should preserve it and use effective ways to develop it. It is not only the demand of the market, but also the requirement of the culture.

As a student having received many years of education, I’m both nicely surprised and gratified by the term“class rights”. This educational concept challenges the traditional education rules, and can be considered as a revolution in classroom teaching. And my favor goes to the abandoning of previous rigid disciplines.

First of all, class rights actually cater to natural physiological needs and basic legal rights of learners. Students’ drinking water and going to bathroom during class used to be denied due to class disciplines previously adopted. And this practice is against human rights, according to western educators. It can be regarded as an improvement that we have taken care of these basic human needs. Schools and teachers used to stress students’ obligations to observe school regulations, but tend to ignore their class rights. Students, though young in age, are inalienable part of human, it was unreasonable for them to have obligations but no rights.

Secondly, the classroom is not only a place for knowledge transfer, but also a place of humanity education. As independent individuals, children should be respected in class. Only when their status as human individuals is valued, can they grow up healthily in a sound educational environment. The caring for class rights implies the principle of equality, democracy and mutual respect, thus encouraging the students’ thinking and stimulating their creativity. Therefore, old-fashioned school discipline can no longer keep up with current situation. Respecting students’ class rights means not only permitting them to drink water or go to bathroom during class, but also encourage them to think, to speak out, to practice what is learned, to communicate and to give them enough opportunities to express themselves. They can question what teachers teach, make their options in doing teachers’ assignment, or refuse to answer teachers’ questions in class. In this way, they can fully enjoy their school experience.

Whether the class rights are scientific or not, the move itself is valuable and significant. If these class rights can be translated into legislation and become legal principle, then students’ rights would be well protected. The education circle should not only recognize these class rights, but also put them into actual practice.

Don't Hesitate to Say “No”

To help those who are in need is always regarded as a traditional Chinese moral. However people have to know well what the need is before the help is offered. When the need is just for some minority's benefit and against most people's interests, or when it is immoral or unlawful, people should not hesitate to say No. Otherwise they will put themselves into trouble.

Unfortunately, there are so many such examples around us that people end up their leadership in jail or bury their glory in shame simply because they don't say “No” while they should. Some people are reluctant to say “No” in front of all kinds of briberies as they want to swamp their power for money. They can't resist the temptations of accumulating wealth in a fast but illegal way. For their own good and their friend's favor, these people would sacrifice millions of RMB Yuan for an unproportional commission and therefore stake there future on scales of law. Other people don't say No because of misinterpreted friendship and lack of sense of law. They never hesitate to do whatever their friends ask them to do. They believe they are helping their friends even when they are actually violating the law or local regulations. Such people will also be punished according to the degree of their misbehavior.

Therefore, to help is not always doing good. People should learn to say a No when the help might hurt other people's interests.

Addiction to Smartphones

Do you check your smartphone frequently? Do you feel distracted if your smartphone is not with you? When there’s no wifi or signal for your smartphone, will you get irritated? If you say yes, then you’ve got addiction to smartphones. Smartphone addiction is a phenomenon that causes a lot of troubles to people.

In the first place, it may cause some problems to your health, such as visual fatigue, cervical spondylosis, and even neurasthenia. A friend of mine suffers from a serious spine collapse due to her addiction to smartphones during pregnancy.

Secondly, if you keep playing with your phone when you are with your friends or family, you will spend less time talking to them. In fact, it is they who need and deserve to be cared for.

Lastly, an excessive reliance on smartphones may weaken your interpersonal skills. When you cannot find a place, you consult your GPS instead of consulting local people. You spare more time playing mobile games than playing real games with real people. As time passes, it’s possible that you may have difficulty in communicating with people.

Therefore, isn’t it better to get rid of smartphone addiction?

Oscar Wilde said,“I can resist everything except temptation”. In China today, nothing is more tempting than stock college students inevitably fall most tragic part of their story is that they never admit that they are tempted. They have “sound”reasons for their tenacity:

Some say, by getting involved in stock market, they can prepare their way for the post-graduation life. Still some say the ups and downs of the market will strengthen their will and help them face all possibilities in their life. Others say they can acquire economic and financial knowledge through watching the fluctuations of the stock market. Eye catching and sound as these reasons are, they actually are indicative of the fact that young people are far from being mature and know nothing about the cruelty of our share market as is pointed out in the media like Beijing News and ifeng. com.

First, the biggest capital for the young is not money but their youth in which they should concentrate on the most important things of the studies. They cannot afford to be distracted. Imagine, if a student plays the stock market game when it is time for class, how can he focus on his lessons? Secondly, buying and selling stocks can only get students into a messy can be placed in financial and debts jeopardy. Once in debt, their campus life is ruined. Finally, as to some students' claim that they can learn finance through stock market. I think their ideas are naive and superficial. As we know, stock market is far from mirroring the truth of our Economic and Financial reality. We have heard so much fraudulence and deceptions in the trading. So stock market is a trap for students.

Do It, but with Love and Sincerity

The year witness target=_blank class=infotextkey>witnessed the birth and boom of an activity online and offline both at home and abroad: the ice bucket challenge. Originally designed to attract public attention to the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the practice has aroused a heated debate during its development. There exist opposing views on this matter. Proponents, represented by the ALS Association, claim that it is beneficial and praiseworthy, for it substantially increased donations for sufferers of the disease. Opponents, however, argue that it wastes water, does harm to one’s body and risks becoming a form of entertainment or commercial advertisement.

Personally, I deem that both sides have an element of truth in their arguments and the issue should not be addressed in a simple and crude way.

On the one hand, no one can deny the fact that the practice has benefited patients of ALS. Many people have not only donated money but also begun to learn about the disease and pay more attention to it.

On the other hand, however, the activity does seem to have deviated from its original purpose. As we have heeded, quite a number of the attendants got involved to attract eyeballs to themselves, rather than the disease. Most remain ignorant about the disease though bombarded by pictures of celebrities soaked in iced water that went viral online.

In the final analysis, I should say that the activity is a two-edged sword. But we should not give up eating for fear of being choked. The best policy, as I see it, is to take measures to avoid the harm done by it. For instance, a campaign should be launched at the same time to provide people with more knowledge about the disease, and encourage them to help those in need with love and integrity. Besides, the activity can well take a different form in drought-stricken regions.

Problems Created by the opulatton Explosion

This sudden increase in the population of the developing countries has come at a difficult time. Even if their population had not grown so fast they would have been facing a desperate struggle to bring the standard of living of their people up to the point at which there was enough food, housing, education, medical care and employment for everyone to have a reasonable poor countries are having to run faster and faster in their economic activity in order to stay in the same place, and the gap in wealth between rich and poor countries grows wider every year.

The most pressing problem created by the rapid increase in population is a shortage of food. More mouths have to be fed every year and yet a high proportion of the existing population are not getting enough of the right kind of food. Over the past two years the total amount of food has decreased, and of course the total amount of food per person has decreased even more sharply.

More and more of the babies born in developing countries have been surviving infancy, and now nearly half the people living in those countries are under the age of 15. The adults have to work harder than ever to provide for the needs of the children, who cannot contribute to the economy until they are older. There is a shortage of schools and teachers, and there are not enough hospitals, doctors and nurses. Farming land is becoming scarce,so country people are moving to the towns and cities in the hope of finding a better standard of living. But the cities have not been able to provide housing, and the newcomers live in crowded , there are too few jobs, and unemployment leads to further poverty.

In a frantic society where efficiency is put great emphasis on, maybe it is high time we should take a breath and think about the bad consequences brought about by the head-spinning life. In the following excerpts, the author presents his opinion on the slow lifestyle versus the fast one. Read the excerpts carefully and write your response in about 300 words, in which you should: briefly the author’s opinion;2. give your comment. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

Fast-free Living What Americans would do if they were serious about stopping to smell the flowers? Is the American lifestyle slowing down, in a response to national trauma and the onset of war? Judging from commentaries by cultural analysts and newspaper columnists, the answer is yes.

A Boston Globe editorial looked back on a hard year: “But it brought growth, too, and a deeper understanding of just how fragile life is, and how what we often take for granted―the kiss goodbye in the morning, the chat with a friend, the Saturday soccer game―is what matters most.” An observation from The Washington Post: “People seem to walk more slowly. They are off their brisk, self-important stride... Motorists are driving better. They lay off their horns. They don’t jump lights.” From The Dallas Morning News: “Americans are experiencing a sort of ‘cocooning of the heart’, cultural experts say. They’re using this time to reconnect with their families and friends.”

If Americans really were beginning to slow down, the contemporary simplicity movement would not be adding another meeting or two a month to our schedules. The antidote to a frenetic work life wouldn’t be something called “power leisure”.

The celebration of the new slowness may not reflect reality, but it surely does reflect some degree of yearning. Yet there may be a few bold steps we should take to get us on the path to fast-free living.

Backpacks. The task of slowing the country down must begin with efforts aimed at prevention. It should begin early, as an inspection of any schoolchild’s backpack will reveal. These encumbrances typically have a capacity of one and a half cubic feet and hold loads of forty pounds. The contents, unpacked and spread out like a GI’s battle kit, represent hyper-achievement in microcosm. A simple yet revolutionary reform would be to decree that the capacity of school backpacks be reduced by two thirds.

Drive-thru windows. The whole point of these amenities is speed, and without intervention drive-thru service will only get faster. According to The Futurist, McDonald’s will soon introduce e-mail billing at some of its drive-thru facilities in southern California. Other chains are experimenting with an E-Z Pass system, similar to the one used for bridge and highway tolls; a transponder in the car would permit purchases to be deducted automatically from prepaid accounts.

Electric light. Another issue related to biorhythms is the seemingly inexorable drift toward a 24/7 economy. The rule of thumb is that if anything can be done twenty-four hours a day, it will be; daycare centers and dentists’ offices are now open at midnight. Almost by definition, the maintenance of basic diurnal rhythms is essential to a humane way of life. Political arithmetic may forever doom a significant rise in the gasoline tax, but what about levying a ten-cent-a-watt tax on light bulbs? One happy consequence might be a shift back to daytime baseball.

Computer keyboards. Yes, computers have made many aspects of modern life more tolerable, enabling stupendous feats of calculation, storage, and management. But they are also an attractive nuisance, putting unimaginable amounts of sheer capability―to buy, to pry, to surf, to meddle―into the hands of people unaccustomed to its wise use. One way would be to decide that every computer must have two separate keyboards―one with all the vowels and the other with the consonants.

The measures outlined above would be a start. Should more impetus be needed, we could ban cup holders from cars, demand that breaking news be delivered only by mail, and add a ball and a strike to the standard at-bat. If Americans intend to take slowness seriously, they need to start picking up the pace.

Write your response on ANSWER SHEET FOUR.

With the development of globalization, there are an increasing number of scholars these days who hold the opinion that we need a common language to be spoken by all the people in the world. However, other scholars are afraid that this will weaken other languages and cultures at the same time. As for me, I am not in favor of the viewpoint that one language should replace others as the universal one.

Nowadays it is universally acknowledged that language is not only a tool of communication but also a kind of art. Each language, no matter what kind of language it is, has its unique pronunciation, grammar and expressions, which contribute to the diversity of the world. Therefore, if the diverse languages are diminished, our world will become less colorful.

We can say that language is part of culture, and plays a considerably important role in culture. Indeed, some social scientists consider it the keystone of culture. Without language, so the argument goes, culture would not be possible. On the other hand, language is influenced and shaped by culture; it reflects culture. In the broadest sense, language is the symbolic representation of a people, and it comprises their historical and cultural backgrounds as well as their approach to life and their ways of living and thinking. Cultures differ from one another, and each culture is unique. There is no denying that it will be a disaster for us to see the world's diverse cultures disappear one by one.

When all the factors are examined, we may safely come to the conclusion that although we are convinced that, no matter what our career choice is, a command of foreign languages is an important skill to acquire, yet we should protect our own language, the carrier of our culture.

Model Essay(范文):

Nothing ventured. Nothing gained. If our greatexplorers and scientists did not live by this creed, where would we be? I think that we must all take risks in our lives, but these must becalculated risks. Like the great thinkers of our time, we must plan carefully, seize allopportunities, and reevaluate our plans.

There is no such thing as a chance occurrence. Columbus in his search for the Indies drewmaps, plotted his route carefully, and set out. Madam Curie worked diligently in her laboratoryrecording every aspect of her experiments. You need to have a careful plan so you canmeasure your success.

Even with a careful plan, changes occur. Columbus was looking for the Indies, but ended upin the Caribbean. Lewis and Clark were looking for a river passage west, but discovered muchmore. You have to be ready to take advantage of new things as they occur.

When things go against plan, you must be ready to change direction. Columbus didn't bringback spices from the East Indies, he brought back gold from the West Indies. It is important tosee the positive side of things. Make your mistakes work for you.

You will never succeed in life if you don't take chance. But before you start, you must plancarefully so you are ready to take advantage of every opportunity and turn mistakes to youradvantage.

Model Essay(范文):

“If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.”These are wise words. One should never give is always another opportunity, another goal, or another option.

Once I ran for president of my class. Unfortunately, I lost. I lost because I did not promotemyself enough. I looked at my mistakes and decided how to correct them. The following year, Iran for president again. This time I gave speeches, called voters on the phone, and banded outbrochures. This time I won. Never give up. There is always another opportunity.

Once I wanted to study medicine. Unfortunately, I didn't like science. I failed all my sciencecourses at school. Then I realized that what I liked about medicine was helping people. Ichanged my goal from healing people to helping people. Now, I'm studying psychology. Thereis always another goal.

Once I wanted to talk with my friend. Unfortunately, his computer was down and I couldn't e-mail him. His phone line was busy so I couldn't call him. Mail would take too long so I couldn'twrite him. Since I really wanted to talk with him. I got on the bus and went across town to visithim. There is always another option.

If you give up, you might as well die. My advice is to always look for another opportunity, another goal, or another option. There is always something else. Don't give up.

The mindset of sacrifice is seen as an important part of the Chinese nation’s traditional virtues. Chinese often regard those as heroes who volunteer to offer assistance in times of crisis. Even children and youngsters in primary and middle schools are taught to learn from this kind of heroes and do something alike when confronting a similar circumstance. However, I hold an opposite view on this issue.

Firstly, the new concepts of self-protection will not challenge or weaken the traditional Chinese virtue of justice and courage. On the contrary, it will be carried toward In a scientific and rational way. For instance, if primary students see a robbery on their way to school, they are advised to remember the traits of suspects and report the case to school and public security authorities. For high school students, they should report it first, and at the same time take some adequate actions to fight against criminals on the premise of fully guaranteeing their own safety. That is a positive and flexible measure to strengthen the self-protection awareness of students under the age of 18 for whom safety should be the first consideration. Given their physical strength and relevant training, it is not wise for them to stand up for justice at the risk of endangering their own lives.

Furthermore, full respect for one’s lives represents social progress. In the past, the government stressed that all efforts should be made to protect public interests regardless of the cost, but today priority is given to individual’s personal safety. And the new concepts actually require adults and teachers to enhance students’ awareness of safety and teach them the value of life. When they know they can not bring the suspect into control, they are advised to seek help instead of acting boldly and bluntly. Certainly we do not want our youngsters to become cowards, but we do want them to be wise.

An old saying goes that a wise man cuts the coat according to the cloth he has. We should emphasize that acts are to be taken in conformity with one’s specific circumstance. And youngsters are not advised to take the challenge and risk beyond their limitation, for they represent the future of our nation.

Nuclear Technology: Benecial or Disastrous?

One question that has caused a great deal of controversy over the years is nuclear technology. Although it offers a number of advantages in world peace and green power, it is also a dangerous technology. Nuclear weapons pose the greatest threat to life. Even the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes also carries some serious risks. In this essay, however, I intend to show how the benets of such technology counterbalance its disadvantages.

The opponents of nuclear power generally base their arguments on the danger it presents to the world. There are two main dangers: the risk of nuclear warfare and the nuclear disasters. The danger of nuclear war is obvious and if one thinks about Chernobyl, it is easy to understand why people are worried about nuclear power, as it can cause major suffering.

There are, however, good reasons for believing that nuclear technology is generally advantageous. The first of these is that there has not been a major world conflict since the invention of nuclear weapons. Although nuclear weapons have enlarged the mechanism of war by threatening to kill more people more secretly and more horribly than those of the past, it is generally agreed that such weapons should be the last thing to be thought of as a means to win a war because there would be no winner in any nuclear conflict. If anything goes wrong, the scale of destruction on human lives and civilization is beyond imagination. The nightmare of Hiroshima is a vivid memory, so nuclear weapons hidden in stock somewhere serve to maintain world peace by theory of counter-attack .

The other most significant benefit relates to the environment. Perhaps the greatest danger facing our world today is a combination of global warming and the greenhouse effect. This danger is caused partly by burning fossil fuel, which leads to our polluted atmosphere. Nuclear power, however, is a much greener alternative which does not have such negative effects.

Already power plants have been in operation in a number of countries. These are successful examples to be followed. All in all, although it is true that nuclear weapons pose the greatest threat to life, the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes is really bene cial. In all appearances, the fear of war is overcome by the need for economic development.

Some people are committed to their dreams and work hard to achieve their goals. What is guiding them is akind of people think that illusion is good for success while others argue that it is not sogood because it may get people far as I am concerned, illusion is necessary in our life only if it is encouraging and realistic.

There are several of all, there is power in illusion. The illusion can lead people to thepath they want to go on and it gives us passion. We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses so that we can find pleasure in the fragrance of backyard garden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old,and the enchanting beauty of a illusion can be enthusiastic love of life that puts sparkle in our eyes,a lilt in our steps and smoothes the wrinkles from our souls.

Secondly,we are born with wide-eyed,enthusiastic wonder as anyone knows who has ever seen an infant’s delight at the jingle of keys or the scurrying of a is this childlike wonder and illusion that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air,no matter how old they are. For example, the famous cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shouldrs would straighten and joy would reappear in his ,for him,was an elixir that made life a never-ending author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote,“Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”

Lastly, people with illusions also love what they do,regardless of money or power or we cannot do what we love as a full-time career,we can as do a part-time vocation, like the head of state who paints, the nun who runs marathons and the executive who handcrafts cannot afford to waste tears and energy and time on “might-have-beens”.We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be”.

To sum up,God gives each bird its food, but he does not throw it into its you want to go,just cherish your precious illusion and let your dream be realized.

In my opinion, originality创意, 新奇is not important in language learning. The reason why I think so is that language learning does not need originality as a vital condition条件.

Originality is less important to an English learner. A case in point恰当的例子 is in pronunciation. Every English learner has to spend a long and boring period of time on a large amount of大量 training of pronunciation. During those days, what students do is to try their best to imitate teacher's pronunciations about English words and make the sound of them, and then repeat them time by time. To an English learner, the experience is of great use很有用 to improve his pronunciation. From this case we can see clearly the great importance of imitation or repetition rather than originality or creativity in the beginning of language learning.

Originality refers to creativity which amounts to changes, but there are many formed rules which cannot be changed in language, such as grammatical rules. We cannot create a new grammatical rule. It is the same that we cannot speak or write a language at will随意, 任意. If one who speaks English wants to make the other peopler understand him, he must speak it according to English grammar; otherwise nobody would understand him. Therefore, there is no originality in grammar learning of language.

I do not think originality is important in language learning. It does not follow that originality is useless. It is when one masters a language and learns to use it that originality could give him a great beneficial help.

There be;Ⅲ。

Variety

6、多举EXAMPLE(重要)

Cultivate independence

Develop a strong sense of responsibility

Enhance social awareness

Build up one‘s confidence and offer one’s a sense of achievement―realize ones value and capacity

Widen one‘s horizon and sharp one’s character

With unprecedented advances in medical technology, a debate has developed over whether or not a person on life support has the right to die. On one side of the debate are those who say that…… On the other side is the view that…… In my mind, I completely agree/disagree the later .

There is no denying that ……has many positive effects. To begin with,……Secondly, …… Finally, ……

However, every coin has its two sides. ……is no exception. Many opponents say that ……

To conclude, ……

A Factory near the Neighborhood

Having a factory near where one lives brings with it both advantages and disadvantages. An obvious advantage is an increase in the number of available jobs, and many people in the community might find employment in the new factory. The factory would bring money into the community in other ways as well. It would have to pay some taxes to the local government, and workers might go shopping or eat at a restaurant in the area before or after their shifts.

However, the factory would bring some disadvantages, too. Depending on what kind of factory it is, it might pollute the environment and bring down property values. It would be sure to increase traffic in the area, causing congestion and making it unsafe for children to play outside. Finally, the neighborhood would become a noisy, busy place. For all of these reasons, I would be opposed to the construction of a new factory near my community. While the employment opportunities would help the community, I believe it would be better for residents to commute to work and preserve the peace of our neighborhood.

Nowadays, food has become easier to prepare. Has this change improved the way people live? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

The twentieth century has brought with it many advances. With those advances, human lives have changed dramatically. In some ways life is worse, but mostly it is better. Changes in food preparation methods, for example, have improved our lives greatly.

The convenience of preparing food today is amazing. Even stoves have gotten too slow for us. Microwave cooking is much easier. We can press a few buttons and a meal is completely cooked in just a short time. People used to spend hours preparing an oven-cooked meal, and now they can use that time for other, better things. Plus, there are all kinds of portable, prepackaged foods we can buy. Heat them in the office microwave, and lunch at work is quick and easy.

Food preparation today allows for more variety. With refrigerators and freezers, we can preserve a lot of different foods in our homes. Since technology makes cooking so much faster, people are willing to make several dishes for even a small meal. Parents are more likely to let children be picky, now that they can easily heat them up some prepackaged macaroni and cheese on the side. Needless to say, adults living in the same house may have very different eating habits as well. If they don’t want to cook a lot of different dishes, it’s common now to eat out at restaurants several times a week.

Healthful eating is also easier than ever now. When people cook, they use new fat substitutes and cooking sprays to cut fat and calories. This reduces the risk of heart disease and high cholesterol. Additionally, we can buy fruits and vegetable fresh, frozen or canned. They are easy to prepare, so many of us eat more of those nutritious items daily. A hundred years ago, you couldn’t imagine the process of taking some frozen fruit and ice from the freezer, adding some low-fat yogurt from a plastic cup and some juice from a can in the refrigerator, and whipping up a low-fat smoothie in the blender!

Our lifestyle is fast, but people still like good food. What new food preparation technology has given us is more choices. Today, we can prepare food that is more convenient, healthier, and of greater variety than ever before in history.

Is it helpful to build an honest and clean government by a fund for incorruptible civil servants? Such an issue has aroused controversy among the public. Proponents believe the innovative move will help to fight against corruption and build a clean government. Opponents say that being clean is an official’s obligation and duty and there is therefore no need to reward them with additional funds. Personally, I’d like to express my disapproval on this question.

First of all, to establish an accumulation fund for clean officials is in fact a challenge to social justice. Public servants should work diligently in an honest and clean way and abide by laws and regulations when performing their duties. That is the basic requirement for them. Any official who fails in this sense does not deserve the position of a public servant. Extra pay for clean public servants will naturally damage the image of public servants in the eyes of ordinary people. In addition, it will play a negative role in their professional work ethics. When public servants are rewarded for what they should do, what about clean doctors, teachers, lawyers, policemen? Obviously such a policy is not well-grounded.

Secondly, the most unfair part about the reserve fund is that it infringes upon the interests of taxpayers who contribute to public servants’ salary in the first place. It’s God’s truth that officials should work for the taxpayers’ interests. But to sustain such a fund system, a large number of workers and farmers will have to pay more for what public servants are supposed to do. As for the reserve fund, only when the amount of the award comes to a tempting figure can it restrain corruption to a certain degree. However, it is impossible to raise such an enormous fund only from their welfare fund. So, the fund is actually a disguised form of reward to public servants through taking advantage of fiscal revenue.

Relatively speaking, public servants are well paid for their service, so it is not rational to raise such a fund of reward. What we can do is to strengthen supervision mechanisms, so as to effectively track down and punish corrupted officials and let them pay higher costs for their behavior. In addition, to fundamentally minimizing the corruption phenomenon in the government, we should take effective measures to put a limit on their power in an attempt to provide fewer opportunities to abuse power.

As economic globalization accelerates, language plays a vital role in cross-boundary communication. An international language like English is inevitably popular among language learners all over the world. And there is a widespread concern whether or not to go abroad for one's English study. To me the answer is undoubtedly a yes, since it provides a chance not only to learn the language, but also to understand the culture.

First of all, going to an English-speaking country is a better way to create an ideal language-learning environment. As it is said, when in Rome, do as Romans do. Thus it can be inferred that a better way to learn how Romans behave is to go to Rome and observe their way of life. It is also true with English study. In an English-speaking country, one is likely to be exposed to more chances to communicate with native speakers rather than being confined to book knowledge only. On his stay in London, a student will have a taste of royal English himself, thus it is easier for him to improve his pronunciation and intonation through imitation. Surrounded by native speakers, a language learner will also find it very helpful in improving other skills like speaking, reading and writing.

Moreover, a student going abroad not only enhances their language proficiency but also comes into direct interplay with a new culture, which is an integral part of language study. Some linguists maintain that one cannot fully grasp a language unless he knows about the culture profoundly, for language is only a medium to conduct communication. Thus living with English-speaking people, one can obtain a vivid first-hand understanding of some idioms, slang and the cultural background And this personal experience will be very difficult to achieve-whatever abundant study resources can be accessed to domestically. By chatting with native speakers in daily life, students can gain an insight in the culture.

Judging from all the analysis above, we may safely come to such a conclusion that going to an English-speaking country is advantageous for English learners. A study experience abroad is such a practice to double the achievements with half the efforts. Fully utilizing the chance to get a deeper involvement in the exotic culture, students may become real masters of English.

While physical exercise is important, I do not believe that it is the school’s responsibility to provide physical training for its students.

That is something that everyone can take care of on his or her own.

Many students get plenty of physical exercise as part of their daily life or recreation. A student who bicycles ten miles to and from school does not need more exercise. A good physical education program must take a student’s outside activity into consideration. Otherwise, some students will spend valuable class hours repeating physical exercise.

If a school offers such activities, it also suggests that students will be graded on them. The range of possible physical activities is great: football, swimming, weight lifting, ballet, ballroom dance, yoga, skiing, horseback riding, and golf are just a few. However, the number of activities that a school could offer is small. Some students could get bad grades in physical education simply because the school could not provide an activity they enjoy or do well. This seems unfair. Research suggests that participation, not excellence, in these activities determines the physical benefits the body will get.

Another issue is economic. Many schools do not have the money to provide gry facilities, playing fields, and athletic equipment for their student. Other schools are located in cities where the kind of space just is not available. A few schools would rather keep money for academic purposes.

Schools can certainly encourage physical activity. They can provide space for activities, events, and classes for physical activities. They can encourage students to plan time away from academic studies to get some exercise. However, I think that providing exercise should not be the schools responsibility.

Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional for students. Which point of view do you agree with? Use specific reasons and details to explain your answer.

Some people may believe that going to classes should be optional, but I disagree. I don’t understand how university students can expect to learn anything if they don’t attend classes. Personal experience can help people learn about themselves and the world outside the classroom, but when it comes to learning about academic subjects, students need to be in class.

In class they receive the benefit of the teacher’s knowledge. The best teachers do more than just go over the material in than class textbook. They draw their students into discussion of the material. They present opposing points of view. They schedule guest speakers to come, give the students additional information, or show documentary films on the subject.

Also, attending classes on any subject teaches more than just facts. It teaches students how to learn, how to absorb information and then apply what they’ve learned to other situations. Their teacher is the best one to help them with these skills. They can’t learn them just by reading the textbook.

Going to class also teaches students how to work with the other members of the class. Many times students will be given group assignments. This is different from what they did in secondary school. Here they’re with people from different backgrounds and experiences. In this situation, they learn how to handle working with people different from themselves to achieve a common goal.

Going to class also teaches students responsibility and discipline. Having to be at a particular place at a particular time prepares them for getting a job. Being at a place on time with an assignment completed prepares them for a career.

In short, by going to class students learn more than just information from the teacher. They also learn how to learn, how to work with others, and how to work responsibly. These are not optional skills in life, so attending classes should not be optional in college.

In some countries, teenagers have jobs while they are still students. Do you think this is a good idea? Support your opinion by using specific reasons and details.

In many countries it is common for teenagers to take part-time jobs while they are still in high school, while in other societies this is virtually unheard of. In the latter situation, students are expected to spend all of their time on their studies and consider schoolwork their ^v^job^v^. In my opinion, students benefit more from a more balanced lifestyle, which may include working at a part-time job. Therefore, I believe that it is a good idea for students to work while studying.

While it is true that a student’s most important goal must be to learn and to do well at his studies, it does not need to be the only goal. In fact, a life which consists of only study is not balanced and may cause the student to miss out on other valuable learning experiences. In addition to bringing more balance to a student’s life, part-time work can broaden his range of experience. He will have the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and will be faced with a wider variety of problems to solve. Furthermore, work helps a student to develop greater independence, and earning his own pocket money can teach him how to handle his finances. Finally, a part-time job can help a student to develop a greater sense of responsibility, both for his own work and for that of the team he works with.

For all of these reasons, I firmly believe that most students would benefit from taking a part-time job while they are in high school. Of course, they must be careful not to let it take up too much of their time because study is still their primary responsibility. In sum, living a balanced life is the best way to be successful.

PART V WRITING (45 MIN)

With the continued growth of online teaching systems and integration of massive open online courses (MOOCS) into higher education, college study will never be the same for both professors and students. The following are opinions from both sides. Read the excerpts carefully and write your response in about 300 words, in which you should:

1. summarize briefly the opinions from both sides;

2. give your comment.

Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

University

The University of Washington (UW) in the US isn't shy about the benefits and drawbacks of online education. UW concedes online courses may be more effective for self-directed learners, and students who are not organized and in possession of good time-management skills may struggle. Thus, students should ask themselves whether they are capable of learning independently before signing up for online coursework.

UW also mentions online courses may not be able to accurately replicate the vibrant sense of intellectual community that has been at the heart of higher education for ages. This might lead some to miss out on learning and networking opportunities.

Students

Jasmine Barta of Arizona State University: I take about half my classes online each semester, and I’ll tell you why : Online classes are the secret to a happier, fuller and less stressful college experience. Some students complain about the lack of social interaction and the ease with which they can forget to meet a deadline. But for me these concerns fall flat in the face of the convenience, flexibility and independence online learning offers.

Chang Hanyi of Boston University: In order to squeeze in some extra learning without taking the focus away from my major, I enrolled in a pass/fail online reading and writing workshop. The coursework is actually as demanding as my other regular language classes. But what I have learned so far is beyond my expectations. My professor assigns weekly assignments each Monday, and I am required to do readings, write study blogs and take quizzes regularly. I am also required to respond to comments from my professor and classmates. So, taking online courses doesn't mean zero physical interaction with your instructors. My professor even invited me to face-to-face meetings four times to address article structure in my writing assignments. My professor also uploads video clips to review class content and audio files to clarify some thorny points. Despite the hard work, I still enjoy cyber interaction with my professor and classmates.

Yang Yang of Peking University: With MOOCS, we are no longer confined to a classroom at a certain time slot. Whenever I feel in the mood to study, I take out my laptop or iPad to watch course videos. I am now taking Legal Writing and Research on Coursera, a popular MOOCS platform. Each week, four or six courses videos are released for us students to learn. Apart from the teaching sessions, there are also quizzes to assess whether I have grasped the knowledge well. Quiz scores make up 32 percent of my final score. The great thing about the quizzes is we even have them before each course. This encourages me to finish all the reading and preview the class early. Although MOOCs are improving my learning experiences, this new form of teaching cannot compete with traditional ways of learning in terms of teacher-student interaction. I used to ask questions immediately after class. But with MOOCs, we only have office hours for question and answer sessions. Most of the time, I won't bother to go.

Write your response on ANSWER SHEET FOUR.

My Views on Online Teaching System or Platforms?

Modern technology has innovated the way teaching and learning can be in people’s life. Online teaching system or platforms is a recent phenomenon and consequently it is controversial. In spite of the fact that both universities and students have embraced this new style of teaching and learning, there are still worries and concerns. Considering both sides, it is clear that online teaching system or platforms can help students achieve higher learning effectiveness despite its drawbacks.

College students now enjoy greater benefits. Firstly, thanks to modern technology, learning online gives students access to a wider range of courses. With Internet access, a wide variety of courses, some of which are published by elite professors of top universities, have become accessible to students from all over the world. The online platform provides a far wider range of courses than that you would find in any school or college. Secondly, the flexibility and mobility given by the online teaching system makes students learn at any time anywhere in their convenience. They have great freedom of choice when they learn online. Thus, it reduces the amount of time they spend on commutes.

On the other hand, online teaching and learning is much demanding and requires students’ full commitment and independence. Admittedly, for those who are not self-disciplined and motivated, it is likely that they will end up with struggling with unsatisfactory results. Meanwhile, although online interaction with professors and partners is very convenient, it still cannot replace classroom’s simultaneous face-to-face communication. Thus, universities should work out methods to prevent the above mentioned problems that are likely to arise.

In conclusion, with the greatest technological boom in education, online learning or MOOCS, is an irreversible trend. So, the question really is not “Which one?” but rather, “How can we combine both?” The answer is that each performs its own functions. Undoubtedly, this revolutionary practice in education will continuously have more far-reaching consequences and will dramatically reshape the nature of higher education.

以专八样题为例,题目中的college study will never be the same for both professors and students是主要信息和关键信息,其他内容是次要信息。

1. summarize briefly the opinions from both sides;

2. give your comment。

就此题目来说,概括学校 一方对线上授课或慕课平台的评价:“The University of Washington (UW) in the US isn't shy about the benefits and drawbacks of online education.”(在线教育既有不可替代的优点,也有局限性。)也要提炼出学生一方对这一方式的认识:“But for me these concerns fall flat in the face of the convenience, flexibility and independence online learning offers.”(学习者充分享受这一学习方式的便捷性、灵活性和独立性。)当然也有学生认为,在某些方面,课堂教学更有优势:“Although MOOCs are improving my learning experiences, this new form of teaching cannot compete with traditional ways of learning in terms of teacher-student interaction.”

Considering both sides, it is clear that online teaching system or platforms can help students achieve higher learning effectiveness despite its drawbacks. 这个观点紧扣题目中的主题句college study will never be the same for both professors and students。

Modern technology has innovated the way teaching and learning can be in people’s life.

Online teaching system or platforms is a recent phenomenon and consequently it is controversial. In spite of the fact that both universities and students have embraced this new style of teaching and learning, there are still worries and concerns.(线上教学方式受到学校和学生的欢迎,同时作为一种新的教学方式,人们对它也有不同的声音。)

Considering both sides, it is clear that online teaching system or platforms can help students achieve higher learning effectiveness despite its drawbacks.

(Firstly, thanks to modern technology, learning online gives students access to a wider range of courses.) (Secondly, the flexibility and mobility given by the online teaching system makes students learn at any time anywhere in their convenience.)

(On the other hand, online teaching and learning is much demanding and requires students’ full commitment and independence)接着分别用admittedly和meanwhile引出online learning 的局限性。

(In conclusion, with the greatest technological boom in education, online learning or MOOCS, is an irreversible trend.)

(So, the question really is not “Which one?” but rather, “How can we combine both?” The answer is that each performs its own functions.)

(Undoubtedly, this revolutionary practice in education will continuously have more far-reaching consequences and will dramatically reshape the nature of higher education. )
