电影以孩子的口吻，叙述了爱吹牛老爸传奇的一生，总喜欢年轻时的经历，向人们诉说他的故事，儿子却满是怀疑，并不相信。认为他的爸爸满嘴跑火车，一点都不诚实，虚荣之心极其严重，因而父子关系渐渐地达到了冰点。直到父亲即将离世，儿子决定回去探望父亲最后一眼，这时候的儿子才明白父亲这么多年来的良苦用心。真正地体会到父亲那充满激情富有想象的一生。

从一开始紧张的父子关系，到父亲的濒临离世关系才得以缓和。影片通过爱德华的自述，威尔的探望，爱德华去世后在他口中所述的人物都来为他送行的形式，塑造出了一个乐于生活，勤奋、自信、真诚、善良求专一的人物，并倡导大众对待生活要积极乐观。

爱德华善于交际，能说会道，幽默风趣，街坊邻居都很喜欢听他讲故事，深受大家欢迎。这无一不是对他的高度赞扬与评价。威尔，他的儿子自小爱听父亲讲故事，但是随着年龄的增长，会觉得父亲的故事原来是如此的虚假，反感父亲的威尔，结婚后就选择了逃离父亲并长达三年没有和父亲交谈。

“大鱼”曾多次出现在影片中，其实不难明白，大鱼就是爱德华的化身。

“永远困在鱼缸中的金鱼是会长大的，更广阔的的空间，会赋予他们无限成长的可能”。这句话让爱德华顿时觉得自己就是那个困顿在一方天地之下的小鱼，广阔无垠的天地才能绽放出他真正的抱负。虽然身体局限于此，但向往世界、探寻世界的大门钥匙已被找到。

因此，他敢于和巨人对话，他明白，离开艾许镇的机会仅此一次。他劝说巨人一起离开这里，不仅为村民解决了一大危机，而且也成为了他迈向新世界的一个绝佳借口。

女巫也并没有传说中那么可怕，丑陋的外表下掩盖的是一颗一心向善的心灵。只因丑陋，就被人们冠上了“黑暗”。只有爱德华无惧外貌和她交友，以至于能够获取信任得到女巫的力量。正如女巫送给爱德华的一句话“一直向远方游去的大鱼是不会被世俗抓到的”这句话给了爱德华面对人生困境的勇气。也暗示了爱德华在作为大鱼成长的路上，始终遵循本心，以自信打败所有“魔兽”一路通关，获得胜利。

丰都镇，便是他离开家乡的第一站，这里给观众的第一感触就是如童话般的美好，在这里的人们从未看过外面的世界，这里更像是为爱德华设置的一个人生考验，倘若没有通过考验，爱德华也将成为这里的一份子，安逸又不安逸。幸好，爱德华不一样，也正因如此，他成为了解救丰都镇的那个人。

马戏团，可以认为是爱德华人生的转折点。在这里，巨人有了归属，实现了人生价值。意外看到马戏团老板的真面目，但凭借善良与真诚打动了老板获得信任。在这里找到了他一生挚爱——桑德拉。

为了给妻子更好的生活，他独自一人扛起重担外出谋生，其中辛苦想必不用多说了，但他终是选择一人承受。或许是机缘，他再次进入了丰都镇，此时的丰都镇却风光不再，满是疮痍。爱德华尽管不富裕，还是选择将这里买下来尽力修复，让小镇恢复了原有的生机。

考虑到每个人的感受，爱德华跟这里的每一个人签订了房产转让协议。丰都镇恢复往日景象后，他也没有选择再去，在他看来，做自己该做的，名利不必在意。
