Going abroad for Studies

The other day I announced that I would go abroad for further studies right after my college education. My decision evoked the immediate objection of my family： Why? Why should I borrow a huge sum of money for overseas studies while I might receive the same education at home at relatively low cost? My answer is： in addition to knowledge， I can gain experience that those who stay at home will never have.

First， experience is the opportunity for the real-life use of foreign languages. While a person can study a foreign language at home， the effect can never be compared with constant use of the language in academic and everyday life. There is no better opportunity to improve second-language skills than living in the country in which it is spoken. Living in English-speaking countries such as America and Australia for several years， for example， my English will be as perfect as native speakers.

Second， living and studying abroad offers me a different perspective of the world. On a university campus， foreign students are likely to encounter their counterparts from different countries and areas and are exposed to different ideas and values. This helps me to have a meaningful understanding of different societies and inevitably sees my own country in a new light.

Third， overseas experience， frustrating and painful as it may be， is helpful. A person going abroad for study often experiences much more difficulty difficulty in adapting to a new culture and in dealing with all problems alone. Yet， the difficulty， coupled with the frustration brought on by culture shock， is a rewarding experience for one s future life and development of personality.

Although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful， the payoff is worthwhile. For the benefit is not merely knowledge gained， but the experience desirable in one s personal life.

一天，我宣布，我将去国外深造之后我的大学教育。我的决定能立即反对我的家人：为什么？我为什么要借留学一大笔钱，我可能会接受同样的教育成本相对较低的在家吗？我的答案是：除了知识，我可以获得经验，那些呆在家里。

第二，国外生活和学习提供给我一个不同的世界观。在大学校园里，外国学生很可能遭遇来自不同国家和地区的同行和接触到不同的思想和价值观。这让我有一个有意义的理解不同的社会中，不可避免地看见我自己的国家，在一个新的'光。

第三，国外的经验，因为它可能是令人沮丧和痛苦的，是有帮助的。一个人出国学习经验更困难往往难以适应新的文化，在处理所有的问题。然而，困难，加上文化撞击所带来的挫折，是一种有益的经验对一个人的人格的未来的生活和发展。

尽管出国留学是昂贵的，也许是痛苦的，但这种付出是值得的。不仅仅是对利益的获得的知识，但工作经验在一个人的生活。

Study Abroad or in China?

There is no consensus of opinions among people as to whether students should study abroad or not. Some people are of the view that the youths should go overseas for further study if possible, while others take an opposite stand, firmly believing that it is unnecessary for students to study in a foreign country.

Those people who agree with studying abroad believe that diverse culture backgrounds can broaden students horizon. They also claim that overseas study can shape students personality because they are forced to deal with all kinds of difficulties by themselves. Nevertheless, the other people who agree with domestic education argue that our educational programs have been greatly improved during the past decades. They also point out that domestic education is convenient and economical.

As far as I am concerned, the former opinion holds more weight. For one thing, it can strengthen the learners abilities to understand and communicate with people from other cultures. For another, the developed countries still have a lot advanced knowledge we need to study. When all the factors are examined, we may reasonably come to the conclusion that studying abroad is advisable.

i am pleased to write this letter for my former student miss nan li, who graduated from this college with an . degree in june li was admitted to the department of law of this college in 1974 through highly competitive entrance examination which is conducted annually and is open to the whole nation. even in such a selective group.

miss li made herself distinguished. as professor and dean of the college, i have access to her records of academic work and moral cond uct, in her fourth year study, i instructed her in anglo-american laws on trespass. so i have known her quite well. miss li's performance, like that in many other courses she taken, was excellent with a superior grade of 86 for the first semester, and 84 for the second semester. in our university and in other university here, 80 is considered xxxaxxx , the highest level.

as far as i know, miss li wishes to continue her study in law for an advanceddegree. i am sure she has had sufficient prerequisite knowledge for the subject and certainly has the ability to undertake the study. i recommend miss li without reservation and shall appreciate yourfavorable consideration of her application.
