TEST 1

WRITING TASK 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

The three pie charts demonstrate average proportions of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals eaten in the USA. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are involved in investigated meals.

As for the absorption of sodium, nearly half of sodium is taken in dinner (43%), which is 14% larger than the share of sodium consumed in lunch. Breakfast and snacks both contain 14% of the sodium, half of the share of sodium in lunch.

In terms of saturated fat, the share of it in dinner still ranks the first at 37%, followed by the figure in lunch at 26%. There is 21% of saturated fat in snacks, 5% larger than the figure in breakfast.

For added sugar, its percentage in snacks is the largest at 42%, quite close to the share of sodium in dinner. The share of added sugar in dinner is 19% less than that in snacks, which is the same to the figure of sugar in lunch. Only 16% of added sugar can be found in breakfast.

In conclusion, except added sugar, dinner contains the largest proportion of sodium and saturated fat compared to other three types of meals.

Encouragement is a tricky hing whenit comes to childhood development,In some cultures, teling children that their potential is limited only to their work ethic is effect of this message on children is a bit mixed.

In some ways, telling children that they can do anything if they try hard enough is a positisve motivating all, it is important that young people strive to be before children can work hard towards a goal, they must have a notion that their goal can be reached; otherwise, they may not try at all. This is the bedrock of many successful people and ocieties around the world. Just look at what the USA accomplished in the 1960s when they put a man on the moon! NASA's rocket lab itself was founded by young men and women who believed that even the stars in the sky were within humanity's grasp if they just worked hard enough to figure out the science behind getting there.

There is certainly a downside to instilling children with the idea that their potential is sad fact of reality is that not all individuals will achieve their goals no matter how hard they try. Perhaps because of being born into poverty, or having the bad fortune of living in a country that is struck by war or natural disaster, or countless other reasons, children may work hard their entire life and never achieve even half of what they set out to do. This can lead to severe depression

in individuals, and even civil unrest in nations where large populations of the youth feel , spreading the message among children emphasizes the importance of ensuring that young people work hard and work smart. In this way, they do not simply toil in vain but rather set meaningful goals which they can achieve and feel a sense of accomplishment.

In conclusion, telling children that they can achieve anything as long as they work hard enough certainly imbues them with a strong work ethic. This is a quality that will serve them well for the rest of heir Iives, While various misfortunes of reality may interfere with the success ofindividuals, working hard is nonetheless a good trait to have and is a justifabie excuse to tell children that they are without limits.

The world of work is changing rapidly. Working conditions today are not the same as before and people no longer rely on taking one job for life. Discuss the possible causes of these changes and give your suggestions on how people should prepare for work in the future.

There is much discussion nowadays as to whether or not the working conditions today are the same as before and people rely on taking one job for life. Diverse contributing factors can be identified. In the following, I would like to show my point of view.

Most important of all, with the development of science and technology, the structure of work force has changed seriously. For example, people no longer need to do some heavy work by themselves. Instead, they can use machines. Thus, they could transfer to other positions.

On the second thought, competition in any fields has become more and more intense, so it is hard for one to keep his or her position without learning anything new and useful. Therefore, in order to fit the new situation, people shouldn’t be satisfied with their present conditions. They should absorb many things that they may have no idea before. Gratifyingly, more and more people are now trying to improve themselves by having courses after work and even sacrifice their rest time in purpose of gaining a good job.

As a proverb goes, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” It is inevitable that the world of work is changing rapidly. Nevertheless, if we determine to improve and perfect ourselves volitionally, I’m sure there is a way in front of us.

Topic: Environmental problems should be solved by the government instead of individuals and private companies. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Environmental protection is no doubt a major issue confronting the modern society with the development of new technologies and the explosion of world population. While the issue is certainly relevant to each individual citizen and all the companies, some people contend that only the government should be concerned about protecting the environment. I concede that the government should lead the efforts in addressing the environmental problems. Nevertheless, cooperation and participation from the corporations and individual citizens are essential as well.

There is no doubt that the government is the agency that should play the leading roles in solving the environmental problems. To begin with, with the power to collect taxes from individual citizens and private companies, the government have the financial resources that are necessary to deal with environmental issues. In addition, the government may formulate policies to provide incentives for the companies and individuals to reduce the amount of pollution caused by their activities. Finally, the government is the only institution that may enact laws related to environmental problems.

On the other hand, without the cooperation and participation of individual citizens and private companies, the government's efforts to protect the environment would not be effective. For example, the government may launch a campaign to educate the public about the desirability of driving compact cars for reducing the air pollution. The campaign would make little difference if the individuals pay little attention to the information or do not care about the environment at all. Nor would the government's goal be achieved if the car manufacturers do not produce more compact cars for the market. In other words, the government alone cannot solve the problem of environment. It takes the collaborative efforts from individual and corporate citizens to improve the situation.

In conclusion, I agree that the government should take the responsibility to lead the society in addressing the problems of environmental pollution as it has the power and resources necessary to do so. Nonetheless, individual citizens and private companies have to be engaged if the government is to accomplish anything.

Topic:Some people prefer to spend their lives doing the same things and avoding change. Others, however, think that change is always a good thing. Discuss both these view and give your own opinion.

Over the last half century the pace of change in the life of human beings has increased beyond our wildest expectations. This has been driven by technological and scientific breackthroughs that are changing the whole way we view the world on almost daily basis. This means that change is not always a personal option, but an inescapable fact of life, and we need to constantly adapt to keep pace to it.

Those people who believe they have achieved some security by doing the same, familiar things are living in denial. Even when people believe they are resisting change themselves, they cannot stop the world around them from changing. Sooner or later they will find that the familiar jobs no longer exist, or that the 'safe' patterns of of behavior are no longer appropriate.

However, reaching the conclusion that change is evitable is not the same as assuming that change is always for the better. Unfortunately, it is not always the case that new things are prompted because they habe good impacts for the majority of people. A lot of innovations are made with the aim of making money for a few. This is because it is the rich and powerful peple in our society who are able to impose changes (such as in working conditions or property developments) that are in their interests.

In conclusion, I would say that change can be stinulating and ebergizing for individuals when they pursue it themselves, but that all change, including which is imposed on people, does not necessarily have good outcomes.
