Think about the decisions you have made that led to your current position. Past: What choices have you made that led to your current position present: why is astern mba necessary at this point in your life? future: what is your desired position upon graduation from the Stern school I have always desired a career that requires innovation, educated risk, and foresight. I learned to respect these qualities from my father, a Lebanese immigrant who worked for years to create his own business. Through his example, I have seen firsthand the advantages and challenges of self-employment--the rewards to be gained and the total commitment required. My goal is to create a business based on my own ideas and efforts, and have made decisions aimed at bringing this dream into fruition .After graduating from college, I accepted a position as the manager of an established German restaurant in San Francisco. I had been the evening manager there for nearly two years while attending college, and knew that the restaurant was struggling. For several years, high overhead costs and poor marketing had brought revenue to a minimum. I saw the position as an intriguing challenge; I knew I could dramatically increase the restaurant’ s profitability. Immediately after accepting the position in July of 1995,I addressed the most significant problem: high overhead from over staffing, food waste, and unnecessary purchases of supplies. I lowered each of these expenses while maintaining the restaurant’ s quality and efficiency. My next target was marketing. Inexpensive advertisement in local newspapers, attractive signage, and Internet postings brought in many new customers. In the meantime, I took control of the accounting, eliminating the need for independent help. The increased revenue and decreased spending had an immediate effect. At the end of 1996, the restaurant reported a profit for the first time in six years. I remained with the business until it was sold in 1997, monitoring these changes in order to provide lasting improvement. Although the position made me realize that the restaurant business did not appeal to me, those two years reaffirmed my desire to operate my own business. I had not abandoned my education during that time; while working at the restaurant, I had taken real estate courses in the evening and passed the California State Broker exam in 1996. My brother and I launched our own property management company in April of 1996,and it quickly grew. We currently have seven commercial properties under management. Our responsibilities include leasing, accounting, and property maintenance. In 1997, I began working as a broker with a commercial real estate company, largely to gain the knowledge of retail to improve the leasing and sales division of my company. I am currently employed in a sales position with a private business bank in San Francisco.

I was hired to bring business into the bank, which rarely advertises, prefer ring to attract business primarily from referrals. My responsibilities include interacting with potential clients, selling loans and deposits, and account maintenance. This job has given me better understanding of sales and finance, which is crucial to the success of any business. Although my ultimate goal is to grow our property management company into a full time business, these positions in other industries have been invaluable learning aids. Property management requires an extensive knowledge of real estate, banking, accounting and sales. I now feel confident that I have gained valuable experience with my work.

However, I know that earning a graduate degree will further enhance the skills I need to develop a viable company. The Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University will allow me to learn from the finest teachers, interact with the brightest students, and experience one of the top graduate programs in the United States. I can only anticipate the invaluable knowledge and training I will gain from being a part of this program.

Although my work experience has been extremely important, the NYU Stern School of Business will be equally as educational. It will allow me to incorporate my experiences with other equally ambitious students, and to broaden my goals, ideas and perspectives. A graduate degree in Management and Organizational Behavior is a significant asset to any business owner. The first year curriculum of accounting, management, finance, marketing, and economics will enhance my knowledge of the basic foundations of business and management. During my second semester, I will enroll in the track courses of Entrepreneurial Studies. These classes will teach me advanced business techniques and their successful implementation. In addition, Stern-sponsored, non-academic entrepreneurial organizations will be both educational and enjoyable. I view these as an opportunity to meet students who share similar goals. They will expand my awareness of new business concepts within our quickly evolving economy--which I hope to incorporate into my own company. The experiences available at NYU are myriad, and a degree from the Stern School will propel me toward the realization of my professional goals.

Dear _,

“The Foolish Old Man Removing a Mountain” is an allegory known to virtually every Chinese. The story tells that in ancient times there was an old foolish man by the name of Yu Gong who was determined to remove the WangWu Mountain, a mountain that blocked him and his family from having access to the outside world, in an attempt to carve out a road leading to the outside world and hence create conditions for his posterity to achieve economic prosperity. The project was a Herculean task and, to make the matter worse, the old man was rather advanced in age. His neighbors all came to dissuade him from the endeavor. But the old man’s answer was that if he should die, his children and grandchildren could succeed him. The day would come when the mountain could be removed ultimately.

Inconceivable as they are, modern versions of this allegory occur in the frequently impoverished mountain areas in present-day China. The mountain folks resort to primitive manual labor (hence inevitably involving casualties) and simple tools and usually spend many years, even more than a decade, to open up routes inch by inch in order to have access to the market outside the deep mountains to sell their farm produce, so that their descendants will no longer be confined to the kind of isolated and economically unprivileged life that they are living. As a student with a Master’s degree in Road & Railway Engineering, I can never maintain a tranquil state of mind whenever I read of stories of this kind. I tell myself that I have the obligation and responsibility to help halt this dire reality. For this reason, I am determined to seek a Ph. D. program in Communication & Transportation at your esteemed university, a program that will enable me to reward my country with my knowledge of the advanced transportation engineering technology in the world. Of course, I am soberly aware that to be accepted into your highly-respected program I will inevitably be faced with fierce competitions. Nevertheless, my sound academic background, rich work experience and the ability to undertake independent academic research all testify to my qualifications as a worthy candidate for your program.

My choice for Industrial and Civil Airport Construction and Highway Airport Construction and Highway during my undergraduate program at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, _ University, seemed to have derived from my family tradition. My father has long been a construction engineer and my interest in civil engineering grew as I saw my father working on construction plans and drawings and picking up bits and pieces of civil engineering knowledge. My academic performance at _ University, which is a key university in the country, has been consistently characterized by top ranking, receiving Student ofExcellence award for four consecutive years. My solid and comprehensive academic foundation and outstanding performance came to the attention of the renowned airport construction expert Prof. _X, under whose direction I undertook my graduation project Design of an Airport Runway. In this project, I completed the overall design of a civil airport together with the airport’s roadnet. The roadnet design fully met the relevant national standards and the overall airport layout was rationally designed, leading to unanimously positive evaluation by the reviewing panel.

My undergraduate program was immediately followed by a postgraduate program at _ University, into which I was enrolled in my capacity as the top performer in the entrance examination. On a fiercer lever of competition, I doubled my academic efforts and managed to be among the top five in my class, winning “Class-A” scholarships. My active involvement in research also bore fruits. I published several research papers, including _, in such central natural science journals as _ and _.

Entitled Study of the Low-Noise Mechanism of the Asphalt Pavement, my Master’s thesis focused on those issues: the mechanism of noise production of tyres, the parameters affecting the tyre’s noise, the noise-absorbing mechanism of asphalt pavement and the pavement configuration parameters affecting the low-noise asphalt pavement. The thesis offered in-depth analysis of the effective voidage of the asphalt pavement and the pavement thickness as major factors in reducing the noise production. The new subject as well as the unique perspectives of my thesis won positive comments from the reviewing panel who rated my work as “significant for the subsequent research on low-noise asphalt pavement”。

My distinguished academic performance and research potential led to my employment with _ Province Expressway Co., Ltd. which made me responsible for the construction and management of the _ Expressway, a key national project. As a major technical specialist, I was in overall charge of drafting relevant tender documents of pavement, participating in the construction of the roadbed, bridge, and pavement, organizing the spot check of the raw materials for the asphalt pavement, holding meeting to discuss technical details of the asphalt pavement, launching technical trainings and field inspections, implementing the Superpave projects. The accumulation of rich and comprehensive experience in construction and management, and the problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively and efficiently, both independently and in teams, are the three most important results I have achieved. Over the past four years, I have been given the “Model Employee” honor in my work performance evaluation.

An equally important component of my employment is my independent research work. Two more papers, Construction Craft and Quality Control of SMA and Application of Superpave in _ Kaiyang Expressway were published in _ (national core journal of highway transportation)。 Some experts believe my papers offer detailed elaboration on highway SMA and Superpave pavement, providing important reference for the construction of other expressway projects.

While feeling proud for engaging in national-level projects, I have also gained an insider’s knowledge of China’s underdeveloped conditions of civil engineering in road and highway construction. The areas of study that I will focus in my proposed . program are closely connected with those conditions—the methods of designing asphalt mixture, predictive evaluation of asphalt pavement performance, quality control of asphalt pavement construction, and the regeneration technology of old asphalt pavement. I expect that through your program I will be extensively exposed to the latest theoretical and technical developments in the world academia and take up fruitful research. If your highly selective program accepts applicants with sound academic performance, rich work experience and promising research potential, I can assert, without any shame of arrogance, that I am exactly the candidate you are looking for.

Yours sincerely,

Dear_,

Due to the comprehensiveness of China’s “reform and open” policies, economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its global position. Though more and more companies built, management of companies cannot catch up with the development of the companies. Management is a burgeoning field in China, so I hope I can acquire more modern knowledge on management in England.

The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to my childhood. My father was among the first of China’s new breed of modern entrepreneurs. As a young girl, it was inspirational hearing about his business ventures, and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. My mother was also involved in business as an accountant, helping him with simple calculations. And so it was early in my life that I hoped I, also, would someday be able to enter the realm of business.

With the time of growing up, I preferred reading books to satisfy my curiosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I encountered. Subjects on business and management became a special fascination to me and my knowledge of psychology as well as interest in this field was increasing rapidly.

As a high school student in China, I had to concentrate on the College Entrance Examination (CEE), even so, books not related to the exams were never excluded from my life. Unfortunately when sitting in the exam in June, 2001, I was so nervous that I didn’t score well in the CEE exam. I enrolled in the department of Computer Science in Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be a failure at the beginning of my college life. After several terms, I realized that I would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. At that moment, I lost my direction and objectives.

My persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed reading the books included Encyclopedia American, and some books about management by Peter ker. I began to notice something interesting: Why some companies can produce more than others? Why some company can sell more than others? Why some companies can build up but others cannot when facing the same difficulties?

With the questions in my mind, I started to read many relevant books. I was lucky to read the book “Jack: Straight from the Gut”by Jack Welch, in Which John A. Byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for a company. When I was a junior, I ran a bookshop by myself near my school. I should manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shop even made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the run the shop. From this, my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business has been greatly developed, definitely I was increasingly interested in what I was doing. By December, 2003, I had finally determined to take business management as my career instead of IT. To accumulate more relevant knowledge, I strived to gain more practical work experience in some big companies.

Fortunately, as a senior, I began by conducting an internship in the Architecture Company in Zhejiang Province. Over six months, I worked as an assistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the different departments in this company and to draft some management system, which broadened my perspective of management conditions and business performance in different industries. The experience showed me that management is much more important than that of I thought in big companies. After graduation, I continued my work in this company. In May, 2005, the company offered me an opportunity to participate in an training program held by a famous management school. Through in-depth discussions with teachers and students in the classes, they all encouraged me to pursue my future career in management field because of my intellectual ability and the brand new ideas I mentioned.

During the short period of training, I realized that pursuing a higher degree in management is a wise choice for me now. Lancaster, with its excellence in management, represents the perfect fit for my needs. In your challenging environment, I can build the required foundation of knowledge related to management to achieve my goals. I am firmly convinced that your admission will be my first step of success. With this in mind, I hereby submit my application, and await your favorable reply.

Yours sincerely,

I am a student, graduated from BaoYang middle school, Nanning, GuangXi autonomous region, in 20_. I am still studying in high school now, because I was not enrolled by the ideal university last year. Recently, I have a dream to study abroad. Then I search online and find that it is more convenient and suitable for me to go to New Zealand for study.

First, New Zealand is a multicultural country, which has the most advanced education in the world. Second, the tuition is lower than other countries’, which I think is mo

re reasonable for me. Finally, the climate of New Zealand is similar with the climate of the South of China. Considering above reasons, I told my parents my plan on going to New Zealand for study, and my parent agreed with me.

As a girl, I like preschool education since I was young. Nowadays, Chinese parents, who want their children to get better education, pay more attention to preschool education. If I study specialized curriculums on preschool education, I will go back China and work hard on preschool education after leaving college.

My plan is as follows: first, I plan to study English in language institute for about a half year in New Zealand. Then, I will study specialized curriculums on preschool education.

I believe I have the ability of study abroad, because I have finished all high school curriculums. Besides, my parents both have job and have rich income, so they will support me to finish my study. After finishing my study, I will return to my homeland and work on preschool education, so as to realize my life value.

Personal Statement

Applicant: xx Program: Msc in Marketing & Strategy

I was a self-trained marketing talent even before I completed my high school. In the summer of 2001 when I was just 18, I promoted the xx by xx (xx) in the entire xx region. I first produced a detailed business proposal and then put it into practice. I established business relations with ten local swimming pools (by signing contracts on behalf of xx), where I put up large-size posters, did questionnaire surveys, took pictures of all the major activities, and them back to the Headquarters. I conscientiously executed all my duties and I earned 800RMB (about 50 pounds) plus a 200RMB bonus, the sole bonus in China’s 5 northern cities where xx launched the promotion.

This event has a defining influence on my course of academic pursuit when I started my college education. I chose to major in business administration upon entering the International College at xx University (xx). xx is a top 20 comprehensive university in China, ranked No. 1 among institutions of its category. One thing special about my program is its international character—all the courses were taught in English by British and American instructors and the textbooks we used were the same as those by the UK students. Naturally, I was most attracted by marketing-related courses and excelled in them all. It was true that doing case study was challenging, but it was most useful in enhancing my ability to perform cogent logical analysis.

My understanding of marketing deepened as I delved deeper into my studies. From a simple definition of marketing, I proceeded onto a classification of different categories of marketing until case analyses taught me practical marketing skills. Marketing requires comprehensive knowledge across a diversity of fields and the challenging nature of the subject motivated me to study it well. A qualified marketing professional should be able to cope with the complicated problems of this rapidly changing business world. As the soul of an enterprise, successful marketing is what an enterprise depends on for its smooth and successful operations.

My understanding was further deepened by reading classic books on marketing. In reading Listening to the Voice of the Marketing by Axel Johne and 4R Marketing, I learned about latest theories in the academia. The classic case analyses in those books illustrate how to apply marketing skills flexibly and effectively. I also derived useful lessons from the cases of marketing failures. My study of marketing has also been strengthened by input from other fields. I attended workshops launched by public relations experts from xx, a leading advertising firm, and gained insights into how productive PR resources can contribute to successful marketing.

Marketing requires strong leadership and communication skills and I have developed them through my extensive extracurricular activities. I was the director of the External Liaison Department of the Student Union, organizing many important campus events such English Talents Show and Cultural Weeks. I acted as assistant to Student Union president and was the hostess of all the major occasions of our College. Through those activities, I honed my organizational capacities both as a leader and a team player. In particular, I improved my verbal expressiveness, improvisational and interpersonal skills, qualities indispensable to a marketing career.

One thing special about my undergraduate program is that, after completing two-year education in China, I have undertaken a joint program between my university and the UK’s University of xx. Over the past semester, I have achieved headway in three major aspects—becoming adapted to rigorous British education and training in accordance with British academic standards, integrating myself into a new culture, and making rapid progress in my English proficiency. Furthermore, my coursework in marketing, my part-time job at the local xx, as well as the graduation thesis entitled xx that I am to complete, have further reinforced my interest in seeking a postgraduate programme in marketing.

Yes, I am definitely interested in studying marketing at a postgraduate level and pursuing a future career in the field. For one thing, I have both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in marketing. For another thing, I have found that marketing is where my true talent lies and a successful career depends first and foremost on the adequacy of motivation. Only when one possesses aptitudes in a particular field will one’s motivation in that field become justified. In this respect, I find myself both goal-oriented and truly motivated in my proposed program in marketing.

As I will have one-year study experience in the UK by the coming summer, I am naturally interested in looking for a UK institution to continue with my study of marketing. My careful research of the UK institutions makes the xx Business School my top priority. While the University of xx has secured its place as one of the UK’s leading research universities, your Business School has a worldwide reputation as a center of excellence in business teaching and research, combining academic excellence with real business relevance. Through your program in Marketing and Strategy, I hope to understand the central problems facing global managers and leaders in business. Based on my observations of the marketing practices in the UK’s business industries, I will try to deepen my understanding of marketing through advanced coursework.

Apart from my xx marketing experience, your program will be another major challenge in my life. However, both of those two challenges are bound to make me proud of myself because I will be challenged to exercise my potential to the fullest possible extent. Just as I succeeded in facing the first challenge through perseverance and strategy, I will face the future challenge with an equally undaunted spirit. I hope that both of those challenges can lead to the same outcome—improved excellence in marketing both as a student and as a future professional.

Studying Abroad: Hardships and Rewards. You should write at least 150 words:

7. Studying Abroad: Hardships and Rewards

There is no denying the fact that studying abroad is a hotly debated topic today. Obviously, studying abroad has a number of rewards/advantages. In the first place, a student can have access to advanced science and technology as well as desirable working conditions which might not be available at home. In the second place, he can be exposed to entirely new ideas and trends. Last but not least, by living and studying in a foreign country, one can improve his foreign language much faster than at home.

Nevertheless, as every coin has two sides, studying abroad also confronts one with a series of hardships. For one thing, learning a foreign language is far from an easy thing at the beginning for most people. For another, a completely new environment with different customs and habits may also be a barrier to overseas students, especially to the young. An added difficulty lies with finance: it can cost a lot to study abroad.

From my point of view, the advantages of studying abroad outweigh its disadvantages. But it is a big decision to go abroad to study and one should take into consideration his financial conditions and his ability to adapt to new surrounding. Personally, I choose to go abroad and study if I find it necessary.

With the time of growing up, I preferred reading books tosatisfy my curiosity.

Unfortunately when sitting in the exam in June, 20xx, I was so nervous that I didn’t score well in the CEE exam.

As a matter of fact, I enjoyed reading the books included Encyclopedia American, and some books about management by Peter .

By December, 20xx, I had finally determined to take business management as my career instead of IT.

In May, 20xx, the company offered me an opportunity to participate in an training program held by a famous management school.

美国大学推荐信应该表明推荐人对于申请者的动机有一定了解,并能解释申请者进一步深造的需要。很多推荐信把申请者吹成了一个甚至比教授还牛的专家,就失去了推荐信的意义,既然已经是大师级人物了,还去留学深造干嘛;

During my first consulting project, I was asked to construct a sales plan for an insurance company. The first step was to meet Adam, the director of sales, to discuss forecasting assumptions. A list of questions in hand, I knocked on the door. To my surprise, Adam was very formal in his reception. He did not understand why we were meeting, so I explained that I would be creating sales plans. At that point, he became outright hostile, he barked out his nonanswer to my questions and informed me he was very busy preparing sales plans. Before I could suggest cooperation, I was ushered out, and the door slammed behind me. Too shocked to react to the secretary's condescending smirk, I attempted to grasp why a textbook opportunity for teamwork became such a spectacular failure. What had I done to attract such hostility? I had just wanted to help. I called my engagement manager to complain, but he just accused me of handling the situation poorly. I was crushed and convinced that I was not cut out for consulting.

To this day, I am not sure why Adam was so hostile. Retrospectively, I can only guess that he was insulted and threatened, because no one had formally requested his assistance. Instead, a twenty-two-year-old appeared in his office, ready to perform one of his most challenging tasks.

Adam and I never became friends, but the incident profoundly affected the way I communicate. Now, every time I interview a client, I begin by exploring and allaying any fears the person might have. I explain the project's rationale and seek a frank reaction. The rapport thus established makes the interviewees comfortable enough to share private opinions. This very human interaction not only secures me with quick yet profound insights, but also relationships that often far outlast consulting project.
