村庄在沟边，方便村民多汲取沟底山间泉水，依靠畜力耕种的时代，山沟是很好的牧场，村民居住的窑洞依山沟地形开挖，山沟的野生草木做了村民的生活燃料，山沟的有利地形也为战乱时躲避灾祸提供了方便。这些早已成为过去，正是过去的村民在山沟过度采伐、垦荒加速了沟的蚕食速度，据说我们村子东面那条南北走向三四里长的叫做老庄沟的沟壑百年前还是塬面。这条沟让分别位于村子南北两端的两条很重要的道路断了，黄土塬土质很松软道路走过几百年就深深的陷了下去，路留在了黄土的凹槽中，路的两边是踩出的两三米高的土崖，这里的人们习惯将这些古道叫做胡同。百年前一场暴雨在村子东面形成了一条老庄沟，站在沟这边胡同口只能遥望那边的胡同口了，再也无法通行了，上百亩良田也随雨水不翼而飞。

村庄的布局很自然也很整齐，村子核心部分是沿一条自南向北走向的道路建起的两排相对四合院，我们把这条一华里多的四合院之间的道路叫做街道。核心部分南端路边是一个十多米高的小丘，丘上建有一座菩萨庙，小丘向西有一个大涝池，收集着整个村子的雨水，这个涝池在街道中轴线的南端，涝池正北街道南端是一座门朝街道面北的关帝庙，涝池西边是一座药王庙，药王庙旁有几棵古槐，药王庙向西是一个小型的盆地叫做西壕，我的家就在这里，这里是老庄沟斩断的村子南边古道一部分。涝池和菩萨庙的小丘往南是一个更小的盆地我们叫做南壕，南壕有村子里一个公用的石碾子，街道的北端一个小坑里是村子另一个公用的石碾子，村子北端再往北300多米是老庄沟斩断的另一条古道。村子里其它院落都是围绕这一布局建造的，整个村子形如一艘航行在董志塬的小船。

村子东北方向的沟边有一座占地二十多亩的古堡，如今只留下了几段残留后墙和宽约十米深两三米的护城河了。古堡村民们叫做城，城墙五米多高下部宽三米顶部宽一米多，夯土筑成，南边、西边、北边由护城河与田野分离，南边护城河处为正门，东边临沟边悬崖。城墙内有洞子(自上而下供人通行隧道叫做洞子，多用作进入地坑院和下山通道)向东直通沟底水源。城墙是村民们在战乱时躲避灾祸的一种防护。与此配套的还有窨子，窨子是开口在悬崖的类似地道的掩体，窨子就在城墙北一个沟边悬崖当中，距崖下五六十米距崖上也有二十几米。据说窨子里面很大储存有许多粮食，遇到战乱强壮年上城墙守城，妇幼老残利用软梯藏在窨子，城破之时全村人躲进窨子青壮年只需守住窨子的洞口就可保全村无忧，相传窨子还有秘密出口。在村子北边很远的地方也有一个古堡，大抵是老庄沟未形成时的村民居住过的，叫做旧城子，旧城子比城小多了，大小不足十亩，但地势险要四周全是悬崖，南边一条很小的土桥与塬面相连，现在只有少许残留夯土，大抵是当年被人攻破而废弃。

过去村庄的一切活动都跟沟紧密相连，在乡亲们日子相对过得紧张的那些年把一切希望都放在了沟里。塬上的耕地是乡亲们的口粮田，地势平坦耕种起来方便也省时省力，大多种上了小麦、玉米、油菜籽、黄豆等粮食作物。沟里能开垦的地方都整成了梯田生产队里分给了农户，整不成的坡度小些的地方被人们开成了坡地，实在没法耕种的地方也没闲着长满了野生的草木。利用溪水灌溉，沟底的平坦处被开成了菜园。沟里的梯田大多种植谷子、糜子、高粱等杂粮和土豆、南瓜、葱等蔬菜。坡地除了种些杂粮蔬菜更多的是种植上了苜蓿、红豆草等牲畜的饲草。这些梯田和坡地常年在雨水冲刷中损毁，在雨后又被修复，乡亲们许多精力都花在了这修补了一次又一次的土地上，作物种上遇到干旱少雨种了一茬又一茬。山坡上的草被羊啃上一遍又一遍，被村民们割上一遍又一遍用来喂牲口，就连山杏树的叶子也被捋了一次又一次的拿回家喂猪。通到沟底的崎岖山路也被乡亲们的手推独轮车碾压成了一米多宽的道路来，这条路将肥料籽种送下去，将粮食、蔬菜和材草拉上来，就连粗壮的木材也是从这条路上被乡亲们抬上去做了房屋的椽檩，似乎整个沟在那个时候成了村子的全部，人们把希望和劳动播撒在了沟里，也将逝去的村民安葬在这里。
