Currently,a student of chemistry at the Beijing Normal University, I am scheduled to graduate in June 1998 with a B. S. degree. The university has offered, on the basis of my outstanding academic record, to exempt me from the usually mandatory examinations for graduate studies, should I decide to join its M. S. program. After weighing all the pros and cons, I now prefer to pursue my graduate studies with your university, as I think it will put me on better footing for my career.

My interest in science in general and chemistry in particular was first fostered by my family, which has, for several generations, been made up of professionals. My grandfather graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Doctoral degree in engineering, a highly unusual accomplishment for a citizen of mainland China in those years. My father, a professor of mathematics, was my main source of inspiration during the three years when I studied with the Beijing Mathematics Olympic School. My mother, a senior engineer of chemical engineering, was the motivation behind me as I participated in a variety of scientific activities such as the Solar Energy Club. Such a family environment has bestowed on me a gift for natural science that I have never failed to take advantage of. It has been my dream to become an outstanding expert in the field of chemistry.

Since I entered into the university over three years ago, I have studied diligently and conscientiously. With that, I have acquired a solid background in chemistry, mathematics and physics. With an overall GPA of 92. 29/100, I have, for three years running, kept myself as the very top student among the 114 undergraduates of my grade. I have not confined myself to my coursework, however. I have frequented the library and probably read more chemistry literature than most of other students. By satisfying my thirst for more knowledge, I have kept myself abreast of the new developments in chemistry around the world. I have also excelled in mastering foreign languages. Although I have never majored in the study of any particular language, my English proficiency has been improved to a point where it is comparable to that of most English majors in Chinese universities, and for that, I have been exempted from having to take an English course in the upper years. In recognition of my consistent excellence, I have been awarded the First-Class Excellent Academic Scholarship for three year.

Education at the Beijing Normal University emphasizes the importance of hands-on experience. In the summer of 1995, I joined Professor Tian's team to work o the synthesis of inorganic materials. In 1996, professor Guo made me a member of his research team, which gave me good exposure to unsymmetrical synthesis. I am now carrying out (sophisticated) experiment under the direction of Dr. Wang. Through these arrangements, I have gained good experiences in laboratory research and greatly improved my skills for scientific experimentation. Starting from the beginning of next semester, I will be writing my graduation paper under the seasoned guidance of professor (zhong kexue), a research fellow from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

As the Beijing Normal University specializes in training teachers, I have also taken quite a number of general education courses, such as phycology, pedagogy and teaching methods. And earlier this year, I was awarded the Excellent Teaching Assistantship for my outstanding performance during the internship at a high school.

I did not allow my heavy load of study to deter me from taking part in extracurricular activities. As the chair of the charity survives committee on campus, I honed my organizing skills and augmented my work efficiency. Convinced that the meaning of life comes from helping others, I have always been most obliging whenever anyone comes to me for help, which has won me lots of friends. Such personality, combined with my intellectual vigor and determination, should stand me ready for any challenges.

Mr. Wang and I have often talked about a variety of mathematics and com*r science concepts and problems. During these discussions I always found him to be delightfully intelligent. Not only does he quickly understand the concepts and problems presented to him he is able to *yze these problems and present solutions. But perhaps most important is that Wang's thinking is intensely rigorous. When looking at any question he carefully scrutinizes it and if he finds any uncertain issues he clears them up immediately. I believe this kind of thought is essential to become an excellent com*r programmer.

Serving as his thesis advisor?I had a first-hand opportunity to observe the way in which Wang's mind works. In his senor thesis Mr. Wang mainly discussed two challenging questions in regards to″ANN″. In our books in China knowledge of ANN and its uses are very rare. Few people in China have studied this topic and consequently the materials that are available on ANN are limited. Working on this difficult project not only did Mr. Wang rise to the challenge but he went above and beyond the call of duty to *yze his secondary sources and test them for accuracy in practice. My four-year research experience since the completion of my undergraduate program in 1997 has helped me to develop from a Bachelor in Engineering to a Master in Science. My research activities cover a wide range of fields including analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, organic catalysis, environmental science, instrumental analysis, nano-analytical chemistry, and biological analytical chemistry. I am proud to say that I have accomplished achievements in almost every of those fields. Based on my research findings, I have published a dozen research papers. In particular, I have received patents from the Patent Office of China for two major research results _The Preparation Method of a Solid Acid Catalyst with High Selectivity and Activity for Esterification_ and _A New Reaction Technology and the Equipment for Gas Phase Esterification_. Both of them have significant value in industrial application.

Nevertheless, I am acutely aware that, in the research fields I am interested in, there are still so many difficult subjects and challenges awaiting for solution. In physical chemistry, China is relatively backward in the fields of catalyst development, catalyst inactivation, reaction dynamics, reaction mechanism, geochemical reaction mechanism, environmental-chemical reaction mechanism. In analytical chemistry, China lags relatively behind its Western counterparts in areas such as instrumental analysis and theoretical analytical chemistry. Basically, China relies on import for large-scale analytical instruments. By contrast, the United States has many world-leading academic specialists and encourages interdisciplinary programs. It will accord me a stimulating and liberal academic environment, apart from the sophisticated research facilities. Rice University is my top priority in applying for a . program and I choose to specialize in physical chemistry or in analytical chemistry.

At Rice University, I plan to learn broader-based foundational theories in my chosen fields. With my solid interdisciplinary knowledge and my ability for the quick assimilation of new knowledge, I intend to secure for myself a RA status to directly start my laboratory research under the guidance of my future advisor. I can also work as TA so that I can study while teaching and conducting my internship. I can apply, test and consolidate the theoretical knowledge that I acquire in the process of internship and degree program. Finally, through theoretical study and scientific research, I would endeavor to produce a well-written dissertation in which I hope to achieve some breakthroughs on both the theoretical and the research level.

After obtaining my . degree, I intend to enter one of the top research institutes to delve deeper into some challenging subjects and to achieve some research fruits. After accumulating certain research experience at an actual research institute, I plan to return to China to work as a professor at a leading Chinese university, a position which will enable me to train many more academic professionals in physical or analytical chemistry. At the same time, I will also dedicate myself to turning my laboratory research results into yet more patents and inventions, which can further be developed into products with pragmatic applications.

During my studies in the United States, I will attempt at some detailed observations of its capital market, the most mature of its kind in the world, to acquire some necessary knowledge in company management and capital operation. For ultimately my career objective is to establish my own company to manufacture my own products, especially those environmentally-friendly chemical products, based on my patents and inventions.
