International travel is becoming cheaper, and countries are opening their doors to more and more tourists. Do the advantages of increased tourism outweigh its disadvantages?

Air travel combined with early retirement and people with money to spend has meant that more and more people can travel the world. Some countries, especially those with famous historical sights and beautiful natural scenery try to attract this large market. While there are some problems that can be caused with all this travel, generally it is a positive thing.

Firstly, consider that all these tourists mean money that governments are eager to tap into. For many countries, tourism is a big part of GDP and without it their economies would suffer. Foreign tourists bring important dollars to the service industry and lots of small shops and vendors.

Secondly, by encouraging tourism governments are promoting their cities and countries. In my country, China, for example, increased tourism and hosting the Olympics has changed people’s perception of our country. At the same time, tourism allows local people to gain exposure to people from other countries, which is also a good thing.

Of course it’s not always a perfect picture. Not all tourists have a good attitude and manners. And in some cases they may even have a negative influence on the local population. But these situations are not so common, and embassies can create tough guidelines for getting a visa. This seems like a reasonable compromise.

To conclude, international travel is a great thing, but it is a privilege that should not be abused. Governments should encourage it, but also put in place measures to keep dangerous people away. This will result in a win-win situation for everyone.(251 words)

Other people feel that it is important to rest the mind during leisure time.

You should write at least 250 words.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

model answer:

It is generally accepted that we all need leisure time to recover from the stresses of work and everyday , I prefer to be active during this time, as I think this suits me better. However, what we do with our leisure time is up to us and no one can say that any particular activity is the best.

Some people relax by watching movies, reading or surfing the internet. People who have physically demanding jobs may choose these types of activities. If you are a nurse or builder, you may feel that you don't want to do a five-kilometre run after work, because you are already physically tired.

Other people do very sedentary jobs. Computer analysts, for example, may spend all day sitting in front of a computer screen. At the end of the working day, they may be keen to stretch their limbs and improve their health by swimming or going to the gym.

Another factor that influences our choice of leisure pursuit is whe...

Many nations around the world attach great importance to economic development and some rich countries also strive for more wealth. In my opinion, whether the additional wealth is a blessing or a curse to citizens depends on how the wealth is made and distributed.

More wealth can further raise people’s living standard by providing them with various kinds of high-quality products from daily necessities to luxuries. Economic prosperity also brings more tax revenues to the government, which has a greater budget to build and maintain better infrastructure including education, healthcare, transportation, etc. All these will increase people’s degree of satisfaction with life.

However, in some cases, the rapid economic growth is achieved at the expense of the clean environment and people suffer rather than benefit from this kind of growth. For example, some factories create massive wealth, but they emit harmful gases and discharge waste water to the environment, posing a threat to people’s health. Citizens living in a polluted area would not have a real sense of happiness, even though they have more disposable income.

Moreover, in a country which is already rich, an important task is for the government to distribute the wealth fairly and build a society with equity and justice. Without a mechanism to ensure fair distribution, the increased wealth would not make citizens happier. Instead, the widening gap between the rich and poor may cause a series of social problems such as higher crime rate and more conflicts.

In conclusion, focusing on economic development does not necessarily result in citizens’ greater satisfaction with their lives. Rich countries should also consider the environment and fairness when they pursue more wealth.

Task:Some working parents believe childcare centers can provide best care for their children, while others think of other family members like grandparents can do this job. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Sample answer:

Traditionally, toddlers are raised by their relatives such as grandparents in most countries. However, daycare centers have gained a growing popularity among working parents in recent years. From my point of view, attending a childcare center has more benefits.

One obvious argument in favor of daycare centers is that it provides children with the professional childhood education. This is because a good daycare centre is normally equipped with well-trained staff who can impart different skills, such as singing, dancing, painting and storytelling, to children through a variety of activities during the day. In addition to the well-organised, structured projects, toddlers are provided with more opportunities to socialize with other peers, which helps them gain confidence and self-consicousness. However, these opportunities are rare to achieve if they are watched over by grandparents.

Opponents feel that a relative care is as effective as children center. The reason for this is that taking care of a child is never an easy task, as children need constant love and attention. In fact, due to the limited number of caregivers, children are less likely to get the one-on-one care. By contrast, relatives, grandparents in particular, have sufficient time to take care of their beloved grandchildren, which also contributes to the family bond.

I personally believe that no child can become an active and valuable member of any society without intercommunicating with other peers. Therefore, although there are conniving arguments for a relative care, it is better to send them into daycare centers in the childhood period.

Nowadays, secondary school students in different parts of the globe are offered various education systems. In some nations, a general education where students are required to study a range of subjects is being provided, while in others students are exposed to a few subjects associated with a certain career. I believe that although the former system helps students understand what area really interests them, the latte is better for high school students in today’s world to find work.

It is certainly justified that students in high school should learn different subjects because most of them do not know where their interest lies; thus, their exposure to multiple subjects assists them in understanding what they have a longing forand in choosing what to specialise in their tertiary education. If a student finds he is enthusiastic about English and can achieve good grades in the exam but feels dull in maths lessons and fails the test, he will realise his strengths and weaknesses. When it comes to course selection in university, they will make a firm decision.

However, focusing on career-specific subjects is more meaningful because assistance can be given to students in increasing their employability and being able to lead a satisfactory life in the future. In such classes, not merely will theoretical knowledge be imparted but also internship opportunities can be provided, with which students are able to apply what they have learnt and then accumulate practical experience. Meanwhile, specialists are gaining increasing popularity in employers because they can increase the competitiveness of the business by creating innovations. Thus, it will be easy for students to seek employment and earn money after graduation.

In conclusion, I think that prioritising a narrow range of subjects related to a particular career is more beneficial to students’ future work and life due to a rise in their ability to work. However, I admit that many different subjects can allow them to know their real interests.

(1) With the development of modern society, governments are allocating more funds to building art galleries, theatres or supporting the life and work of artists. Some people disapprove the governments’ decisions and insist that the money should be spent on public services to improve people’s living standard in a more direct way. In my view, however, although funding public services is essential to social development, art is also an indispensable part of the society that should be valued.

(2) It is true that establishing public services is the top priority of the government. It provides for basic human needs and guarantees the stability of the society. In China, people have been relying on public services since the day of birth. They receive education in schools founded and supported by the government. When they are sick, the government helps paying for the medical care. Besides, everybody enjoys the public facilities like highways, parks, libraries and so forth which all come from government investments.

(3) However, this does not mean that the government spending money on art is unnecessary. Although people do not feed on art, it is still their natural instinct to pursue beauty. Once the survival needs are met, people start seeking spiritual fulfillments by creating and appreciating art, which helps them to calm down and relax after long hours of labor. Naturally, apart from bread and milk, the government should also take care of the spiritual life of common people.

(4) Admittedly, with successful commercialised operation, many art groups perform well and do not need the financial support from the government. Yet, there are still ones that depend on government funding. For example, Peking Opera, which is a valuable cultural inheritance of China, might not have survived and thrived without the promotion by the government. It is the same with many other art forms of art all over the world.

(5) In conclusion, it is the government’s duty to facilitate public services that provide for the basic needs of citizens. Nevertheless, art is also an important part of human life and deserves equal attention and support from the government.

It is common for enterprises to have seniors as top executives nowadays. However, there is an argument that young people should also be offered the opportunities to be the leaders as the age should not be the glass ceiling that bars them from upper management in large corporations. From my perspective, I agree with this idea.

First of all, young leaders, especially those employed in high-technology companies, are easy to keep pace with the rapidly changing market. Admittedly, compared with senior employees, they do lack experience of the past, but facing this rapid shifting market, their inadequate experience can be in turn seen as an advantage, as being in the same age of the targeting customers, they can understand the current popular tendency and are less likely to be inhibited by self - consciousness. Therefore, they are able to absorb the latest information and use their lateral thinking to make adaptations to meet the demand,. Besides, young people have more abundant time and vigorous to be a leader. Being managers means catering to enormous tasks simultaneously, and as most young people have not been married and formed their families, they can devote themselves to their work and maximise their output, which is impossible for older people.

Undeniably, when facing an emergency or a dilemma, compared with the aged leaders, the young generation tend to be less responsible and considerable, resulting in impulsive decisions due to their immaturity. Consequently, organisations might be at risk. However, young candidates who have the potential to be the manager can be first recruited as the management trainee, and after having the professional training ranging from six months to five years, they are sure to have the capability to deal with diverse situations.

In conclusion, despite the defects of young managers, young people are eligible for leadership. Therefore, organisations should be encouraged to employ the young generation in top positions.
