在英语国家，许多人都以宗教典著当中的人物起名，特别是《圣经》当中有许多人物，像犹大，诺亚，夏娃等等，他们每个人物背后都有与之相关的故事，每个性格千差万别，这些人名伴随着他们的故事被人们传诵，久而久之也被赋予了一些除了标识姓名之外的比喻和象征的意义。其数量直达和使用频率之高，使得人们常常意识不到自己随意的一句话竟源于圣经。译者在遇到这些翻译时，必须对上下文进行仔细推敲，以决定是使用直译还是意译。例如：TAdam,butIstillthinkitsfunny.你给我们讲的那个笑话简直老掉了牙，不过我认为还是很有趣的。这句子中有一个著名的圣经人物亚当（Adam），据圣经记载，他是上帝创造的第一个人类，而夏娃是第一个女人，他们曾一起在上帝创造的花园—伊甸园中生活，由于夏娃偷食了禁果，他们两个均得到上帝不同方式的惩罚。亚当和夏娃可以说是人类的始祖了，因此“亚当”这个专有名词便蕴涵了新的意义：指古老或陈旧的事物或人。因此，如果对此了解不深，直译其人名，便会曲解原文意思，使意义模糊不清。
