The graph below shows changes in global food and oil prices between 2000 and 2011.

The line graph compares the average price of a barrel of oil with the food price index over a period of 11 years.

It is clear that average global prices of both oil and food rose considerably between 2000 and 2011. Furthermore, the trends for both commodities were very similar, and so a strong correlation () is suggested.

In the year 2000, the average global oil price was close to $25 per barrel, and the food price index stood at just under 90 points. Over the following four years both prices remained relatively stable, before rising steadily between 2004 and 2007. By 2007, the average oil price had more than doubled, to nearly $60 per barrel, and food prices had risen by around 50 points.

A dramatic increase in both commodity prices was seen from 2007 to 2008, with oil prices reaching a peak of approximately $130 per barrel and the food price index rising to 220 points. However, by the beginning of 2009 the price of oil had dropped by roughly $90, and the food price index was down by about 80 points. Finally, in 2011, the average oil price rose once again, to nearly $100 per barrel, while the food price index reached its peak, at almost 240 points.

In my view, although these methods can help us get some general ideas, a full comprehension of the local culture can only be obtained through travelling in person.

Firstly, cultural items acquired from books, movies or internets only show the opinions or attitudes of a certain group of people, which in some circumstances convey wrong messages with cultural misunderstanding and discrimination. For example, in some books or movies British people frequently appears a bit conservative, sophisticated and indifferent, but when we travel to the United Kingdom, we’ll find many people friendly, outgoing and sometimes a little crazy. So travel grants us the opportunity to break the stereotypes brought by mass media.

Secondly, travel boosts cultural communication in a more active way than books or videos do. During travel, we can initiatively interact with local people and deeply experience their life,such as their dietary habit, endemic customs and unique manners, to mention just a few, while transiting our own culture to those local people in the process of mutual exchanges. Obviously, it is not that easy for mass media to achieve such a direct and effective interaction.

To conclude, although some mass media, such as books, films or internet, play a necessary role in the cultural exchange, traveling to other places is of greater importance in order to personally experience the distinctive cultures and customs which may diverge from what we have acquired from mass media.

And also, through education, government can teach people how to be appropriate citizens, thus in this way, people’s moralities and behaviors are constrained in a value system and the social stability can be maintained.

In the perspective of individuals, education can enrich personal lives. Through education, we can explore different cultures and customs. Thus in this way education can open our eyes and broaden our mind. And education can also meet interests of each student.

While of course, all the functions mentioned above have one common prerequisite: one can make a living in the first place. For this society is practical, many university students have studied for four years, but their ability to deal with practical things is too low to be acceptable. So education should provide the basic general knowledge to university students, so that they can be get employed and make a living. And if a nation wants to develop and to compete with other nations, it needs skilled workers to support economic development and to maintain the people creative, which can only be achieved through education.

So it has some sense to realize that students’ preparation for employment is the function of education, but it has far more function which should not be neglected. (280 words)

The chart below shows the process of waste paper recycling.

The flow chart shows how waste paper is recycled. It is clear that there are six distinct stages in this process, from the initial collection of waste paper to the eventual production of usable paper.

At the first stage in the paper recycling process, waste paper is collected either from paper banks, where members of the public leave their used paper, or directly from businesses. This paper is then sorted by hand and separated according to its grade, with any paper that is not suitable for recycling being removed. Next, the graded paper is transported to a paper mill.

Stages four and five of the process both involve cleaning. The paper is cleaned and pulped, and foreign objects such as staples are taken out. Following this, all remnants of ink and glue are removed from the paper at the de-inking stage. Finally, the pulp can be processed in a paper making machine, which makes the end product: usable paper.
